On Monday, Oct. 12, Bill Fennelly disclosed plans to step away from coaching at the close of the current season, drawing a curtain on 32 years directing the women's basketball program at Iowa State — a tenure that produced more victories than any other coach in the athletic department's records.
Among all active Division I head coaches, Fennelly — now 69 — holds a tenure surpassed in length only by UConn's Geno Auriemma. Fennelly's tenure on the Iowa State bench stretches back to 1995, and across those 32 years the program reached the NCAA Tournament on 24 separate occasions. In a written statement, he described the opportunity to work alongside dedicated staff while guiding so many players at Iowa State as the defining privilege of his professional career.
The coach noted that Iowa State's program had earned a standing for both on-court performance and classroom achievement, even as the most recent season fell short of the targets the team had set for itself. Opening at 14-0 and climbing as high as tenth in the national rankings, the Cyclones then dropped five consecutive contests. A 22-8 record through the regular season gave way to an early exit at the Big 12 Tournament, where Arizona State ended their run in the opening round, followed by a defeat against Syracuse in their first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Nine players departed Iowa State's roster through the transfer portal once the campaign concluded, among them Audi Crooks — who had ranked second in the country in scoring — alongside All-Big 12 honorees Addy Brown and Jada Williams. Crooks opted for an in-conference destination at Oklahoma State, Brown headed to UCLA, and Williams chose LSU.
Amid an ongoing search for a new athletic director following Jamie Pollard's departure earlier this month, Fennelly communicated to the program that while his passion for coaching remains and his effort has not diminished, the role carries a natural endpoint. He stated that making his plans known at this stage serves the program's interests, gives the incoming athletic director a clearer picture of what lies ahead, and allows for orderly planning around the program's future direction. Over his tenure, Fennelly has taken Iowa State to the NCAA Tournament in six straight years and in 17 of the past 19.
The Cyclones had no March Madness appearances on record until the 1995 season brought a new arrival to the program. Three Big 12 championships were added to the program's record during his tenure, and his conference-win total across Big 12 play has climbed past the record previously held by Kim Mulkey, making him the program's all-time leader in that category.
Prior to joining Iowa State's program, Fennelly — who grew up in Davenport, Iowa — spent time at Toledo, where his tenure on the Rockets' bench produced three conference titles and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to accepting the Toledo position, his coaching background included an assistant role on Muffet McGraw's staff at Notre Dame. Across 38 seasons directing programs at the Division I level, his won-loss ledger stands at 822 victories against 388 defeats.
Under Fennelly's direction, the Iowa State program produced 24 players who earned All-American honours and sent 16 athletes into the WNBA draft, with Bridget Carleton — now a fixture on the Portland Fire roster — among those who developed there.
Voters in the Big 12 placed Iowa State near the bottom of the conference standings in their preseason projections, slotting the program 11th overall when the poll results came out. The team's home schedule gets underway on Nov. 2, when the Cyclones host Grambling State to open the new campaign.
