BCCI Plans India vs Rest of World XI for Centenary Celebrations, Ajit Agarkar to Exit as Chief Selector

The BCCI AGM held on September 18, 2026 approved a centenary programme from December 2027 to December 2028, with a planned India vs Rest of World XI match as its centrepiece. The format remains undecided. The meeting also confirmed that chief selector Ajit Agarkar will not renew his contract beyond October 4, 2026, with no official reason given. Parthiv Patel has been reported as the leading candidate to succeed him, though no formal appointment has been announced.

At its Annual General Meeting on 18 September 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India approved a twelve-month centenary programme scheduled to run from December 2027 through December 2028. A fixture between India and a Rest of the World XI stands as the centrepiece of those anniversary events, though the format — whether a Test, one-day international, T20 or a multi-match series — remains undecided. At the same gathering, Ajit Agarkar reportedly told the BCCI that he does not plan to extend his tenure as chairman of selectors past his existing contract, which runs until 4 October 2026. Established in December 1928, the BCCI will mark its hundredth year during the 2027–2028 period. Cricketers from nations including Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand, the West Indies, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are understood to be in contention for the Rest of the World XI, although the squad's definitive line-up is yet to be announced, according to broadcast reports. No particular dates within the December 2027 to December 2028 timeframe for the fixture have yet been announced. At the AGM, BCCI office-bearers received authorisation over selection committee matters, with the board appearing poised to identify a successor to Agarkar ahead of his contract's expiry on 4 October 2026. Neither Agarkar nor the BCCI has put forward any explanation for the choice not to continue in the role. Agarkar took up the role of BCCI selection committee chairman on 4 July 2023, with his contract extending through to 4 October 2026, covering a period of slightly more than three years. No official explanation has been put forward by the BCCI regarding the circumstances surrounding his exit, and verified reporting has yet to attribute a reason to either party. By authorising office-bearers to oversee selection committee responsibilities, the AGM has delegated the chairman appointment process to senior board officials, removing the requirement for a further full general meeting prior to the decision being finalised. The board is understood to be pushing for the handover to be concluded ahead of Agarkar's contract expiry. Parthiv Patel has been named in reports as a leading candidate to take over from Agarkar, though the BCCI has yet to announce any official appointment. No candidate has been publicly identified by the board, with the appointment process still under way following the authority conferred on office-bearers at the 18 September meeting. The new chairman will assume the role during a testing period for Indian cricket, with the board's centenary celebrations scheduled to get under way in December 2027 requiring his presence from an early stage. The BCCI has yet to provide any schedule for when the appointment will be finalised.
