Bank of America's share price retreated on Wednesday after the company's third-quarter figures fell short of Wall Street projections. Priced at $49.83 when the session opened — down from the prior day's close of $53.96 — the stock declined further to $49.36 by the time roughly 21.8 million shares had changed hands.
Adjusted earnings for the quarter came in at $1.08 per share, two cents beneath the $1.10 analysts had collectively projected. Revenue for the period landed at roughly $29.96 billion, short of the $30.58 billion analysts had forecast.
A one-time regulatory charge pulled net income down 17 percent, leaving the figure at $6.9 billion, or $0.91 per share. Twelve months earlier, the same quarter had the bank posting per-share earnings of $1.06. Bank of America's latest reported figures included a net margin of 17.56% and a return on equity of 12.20%, with quarterly revenue up 3.2% against the equivalent period a year earlier.
Fines totalling around $1.21 billion were levied over deficiencies in anti-money-laundering controls, Bank Secrecy Act obligations, and sanctions compliance, with the violations encompassing a failure to flag more than $5 billion worth of suspicious transactions within required timeframes. The charge reduced quarterly profit figures by roughly 17 cents a share and carried no tax-deductibility benefit.
Chief Executive Brian Moynihan told analysts that the bank is working through its compliance obligations and anticipates that the elevated costs tied to remediation work and software patching will taper off as those efforts progress. Roughly 1,000 outside contractors were deployed to address software weaknesses identified through Anthropic's Mythos testing, as part of the bank's broader remediation programme.
Net interest income climbed 8% compared with the prior year, reaching $16.4 billion. Four separate financial metrics moved higher: the retail banking division posted a 4% increase, wealth-management operations recorded a 13% gain, average loan balances expanded by 6%, and deposit holdings edged 2% higher. Dividends and share repurchases together returned $8.3 billion to the bank's investors over the course of the quarter.
Cost growth outpaced revenue gains, nudging the adjusted efficiency ratio upward from roughly 60% to around 62%. Revenue from bond trading slipped 17%, results across investment banking and trading fell short of expectations, and loss provisions tied to credit risk reached $1.3 billion.
Holders of record on September 4th received a cash distribution of $0.32 per share on September 25th, with the annualised figure working out to $1.28 per share and a trailing yield of approximately 2.5%, as set out in Bank of America's quarterly disclosure. The latest distribution represents an increase from the previous quarterly dividend of $0.28 per share. Dividends distributed to shareholders represent roughly 29 cents of every dollar the bank generates in profit.
Morgan Stanley's analysts left an "overweight" designation on the shares in place. Oppenheimer lowered its rating on the stock to "market perform," while Royal Bank of Canada maintained an "outperform" stance and raised its price target by six dollars to $65.00. Robert W. Baird kept a "neutral" stance on the stock while lifting its valuation target to $62.00 from $58.00. Barclays raised its target price by one dollar to $72.00 while maintaining an "overweight" rating on the shares.
Of the 26 analysts covering the stock, 19 recommended buying while the remaining seven favoured holding. Analyst ratings place the stock in "Moderate Buy" territory, with a consensus price target of $64.22.
