Stockholder approval is needed before the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund receives its opening contribution, and the board retains separate authority to release an additional 2% of shares each time the company's valuation climbs by 50% beyond a set threshold. Broader societal consequences of AI — workforce displacement among them — would receive backing through the fund, a domain where Anthropic has already directed $200 million toward research and response efforts. Structured as a wholly owned limited liability company, the fund retains the operational latitude to channel money either through nonprofit donations or by delivering financial assistance directly to targeted groups. Groundwork for the effort draws on two earlier commitments — a pledge from Anthropic's co-founders to direct 80% of their equity stakes toward charitable purposes, along with a staff giving scheme that has drawn in roughly half of the company's employees. Taken together with pre-existing pledges, the latest commitment brings roughly one-fifth of Anthropic's shares into a pool earmarked for public benefit purposes, a proportion that could grow further if the company hits certain valuation thresholds down the line.
