Anker's UV Printer: A New Tool for Creative Projects
The interest in traditional printers has waned over time, largely due to challenges associated with toner management and hardware policies. However, Anker's introduction of the eufyMake E1 UV printer, priced at $1,900, brings new possibilities to the table. This device can print on various surfaces and produce embossed 3D effects.
The eufyMake M1 is reminiscent of the rise of at-home 3D printing. While it does not transform digital models into physical objects, the UV printer offers significant potential for creative entrepreneurs, such as those on platforms like Etsy.
At a recent Anker event, the printer demonstrated its capabilities by printing a detailed image on a ceramic magnet. The prints, with a resolution of 1,440 DPI, maintained clarity and detail. The printer includes a rotary attachment, enabling printing on cylindrical items like thermoses, handling angles up to 30 degrees without distorting the image.
Understanding UV Printing Technology
UV printing, which utilizes UV-curable inks, is not a novel concept. The technology applies layers of color that dry almost instantaneously under specific light wavelengths, allowing it to coat surfaces such as paper, wood, and acrylic. Desktop-sized UV flatbed printers are available, typically ranging from $2,000 to $7,000. The eufyMake device is noted for being one of the first to offer 3D texture capabilities for home use at a more accessible price point.
The printer is accompanied by a separate UV laminating machine, suitable for smaller tasks like sticker creation. The system is controlled through an app, allowing users to set print parameters and manage 3D effects. However, the printer uses proprietary inks, and Anker has not disclosed future pricing for ink sets. The initial package includes enough ink to print approximately 1,000 2x2-inch images, but 3D printing consumes more ink.
Performance and Versatility
The eufyMake M1 can print on a wide range of objects, though it operates at a slower pace compared to standard inkjet printers. It takes about three minutes to print a small 2x2 inch square and six minutes for two squares. Larger projects may require between 15 and 30 minutes, while medium-sized 3D textured paintings could take 12 to 15 hours, consuming significant ink.
The printer is designed to accommodate both large and small objects, as well as those with unconventional shapes. This feature opens up possibilities for personalized art on items like PC cases, eliminating the need for custom services or traditional painting methods.
Availability and Pricing
The device will be available through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, starting April 29. Early supporters can purchase it for $1,700, with a further discount to $1,500 for those who pay a $50 deposit on Anker's website. It is important to note that crowdfunding does not guarantee a product, although Anker is recognized as a reputable brand with a history of delivering on its projects. When asked about the impact of U.S. tariffs on pricing, Anker representatives did not provide a comment, citing the fluidity of the trade situation between the U.S. and China.
