Alcaraz Claims Japan Open Title as Sinner Ends Season Early Due to Knee Injury

Carlos Alcaraz won the Japan Open in Tokyo, defeating Jiri Lehecka 7-6 6-4 for his first title in nearly eight months. On the same day, world number one Jannik Sinner announced the end of his 2026 season due to knee inflammation, which will result in him losing his top ranking. Alexander Zverev is now set to become world number one, with Sinner forfeiting more than 3,000 ranking points by being unable to defend his Paris Masters and ATP Finals titles.

Alcaraz collected a title at the Japan Open — his first in roughly eight months — while Sinner, kept out by injury, brought his season to an early close, a decision that is set to move him out of the top ranking. While Alcaraz was dismissing Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 in Tokyo — setting aside the wrist trouble that had dogged him — Sinner was withdrawing from his 2026 campaign, a knee injury having cut short a season that began with considerable expectation. Zverev finds himself on the verge of a position — the men's world number one ranking — that no German player since Boris Becker has held, a prospect that has come into view following Sinner's exit from the draw. Wimbledon glory claimed for a second straight year forms part of Sinner's season record, though a pending ban could cost him roughly 3,000 ranking points along with his defended titles at both the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals. His current ranking points place Zverev within reach of the world No. 1 position — a distinction fewer than 30 players have ever held — regardless of whether he adds another match win before the 2026 season concludes. Three tournaments into his return from injury, Alcaraz wrapped up the title with a victory over Lehecka before telling the press that lifting a trophy again meant a great deal to him. His 30-match unbeaten streak came to a halt with a second-round exit at the French Open.
