AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi stated on Sunday that his party was open to joining forces with groups opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party retaining power in Uttar Pradesh for a third term, adding that the forthcoming state assembly election would differ from the last one.
Addressing the prospect of a pre-poll alliance before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Owaisi stated that no individual party could defeat the BJP on its own, and extended an open invitation to ideologically aligned parties to hold talks, adding that his party did not wish to see the BJP retain power in the state for a third consecutive term. Those opposed to a BJP-led government were invited to enter into discussions, with an openness to forming alliances aimed at preventing the party from taking office.
Referencing the party's performance in the Bihar elections, the AIMIM leader noted that his party had reached out to multiple opposition figures to negotiate seat-sharing arrangements, and that Akhtarul Iman, the party president, had written to leaders across the RJD, Congress, CPI, and Communist Party, though none of them had agreed to the proposal. He indicated that a request had been made for six seats, but the other party did not consent.
Owaisi stated that AIMIM had expanded its presence in Uttar Pradesh, adding that the party had built up its leadership at the local level and that its organisational base had grown considerably. He indicated that the organisation was actively fulfilling its obligations.
He noted that the party would press ahead with its activities regardless of any ongoing alliance negotiations, adding that the status of such discussions had no bearing on the organisation's day-to-day efforts. The party expressed openness to coalition discussions with any group seeking to counter the BJP's electoral position.
Owaisi remarked that voters in Uttar Pradesh were closely observing which parties sought to challenge the BJP and which aimed to support its position. Owaisi added that the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls would, in his view, present a distinct set of challenges compared with earlier contests. The upcoming vote, he said, was expected to differ from those held in 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2022.
Directing his remarks at the BJP administration in Uttar Pradesh, Owaisi contended that the party had left a number of its electoral commitments unmet, and pointed to concerns over governance, public order, power supply, and land-related disputes, adding that the upcoming contest would be notably different and more demanding given the party's record on those pledges.
Targeting both the previous Samajwadi Party administration and the incumbent BJP government, Owaisi stated that a particular form of lawlessness had prevailed during the Samajwadi Party's tenure in office. He further questioned the alleged Ram Mandir embezzlement case and called for the SIT report to be made publicly available, asking why it had not yet been released, while also stating that a distinct form of disorder had taken hold under the current administration. He also raised the question of why bail was being granted in such cases and on what grounds those conditions were being applied.
Owaisi noted that AIMIM had been touring constituencies across the region ahead of the Assembly elections to build its organisational base and gather an understanding of local concerns, adding that outreach efforts in Uttar Pradesh would continue in the coming period. The reporting is filed from Kanpur.
He noted that their schedule would take them to Shravasti within six days, with Azamgarh to follow thereafter. He further stated that public gatherings would be organised across three or four additional constituencies throughout Western Uttar Pradesh. Owaisi described the initiative as being aimed at bolstering the party's organisational capacity ahead of forthcoming elections, noting that sustained interaction with the public helps the party understand ground-level issues, while direct community outreach allows members to identify the difficulties people encounter and draw attention to the current administration's policies.
