On Sunday, Abhishek Sharma reached 2,000 runs in men's T20 Internationals having faced fewer balls than any other player in the format's history. The milestone was reached during the third T20I at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, in a contest staged against the West Indies.
Arriving at the 2,000-run threshold in 1,024 deliveries faced, the left-handed batter surpassed a mark that had stood in Suryakumar Yadav's name — set across 1,164 balls — to claim the fastest such milestone on record. Four more batsmen appear on the list beyond those names: New Zealand's Tim Seifert having faced 1,395 deliveries, India's Hardik Pandya 1,390, Australia's Glenn Maxwell 1,304, and compatriot Aaron Finch 1,283.
With 33 runs standing between Abhishek and the 2,000-run milestone ahead of the match, he walked out to bat with the landmark within reach. Scores of 21 and 20 in the opening two matches gave way to an innings of 69 from 30 deliveries in the third, built on six fours and five sixes.
After Sanju Samson departed early, a 108-run partnership with Ishan Kishan for the second wicket took shape, with Abhishek reaching fifty off just 18 deliveries — a first half-century in the series and the 14th of his T20 international career. His early aggression at the crease pushed India's scoring tempo upward from the first over.
Springer collected the caught-and-bowled chance in the tenth over after Abhishek's pull off a short-pitched delivery failed to connect cleanly, the ball looping back to the bowler rather than finding the boundary.
That tally placed Abhishek among just five others — Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and KL Rahul — who had previously crossed 2,000 runs in T20 international cricket for India. Opener-led batting accounted for the majority of the runs he has accumulated. Among T20I batters who have accumulated a substantial volume of runs, his strike rate ranks near the top of all time, a record complemented by three centuries and 14 half-centuries to his name.
India's eleven for the match featured Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson behind the stumps at the top, followed by Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer leading the side, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Prince Yadav rounding out the bowling attack. The West Indies squad comprised eleven players, with Shai Hope serving both as captain and wicketkeeper, alongside Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Keemo Paul, Roston Chase, Shamar Springer, Shamar Joseph, and Gudakesh Motie.
