AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal spoke out on Friday against the detention of activist Abhijeet Dipke and addressed the police presence that followed the Tiranga march held near Central Park in Connaught Place. Posting on X, Kejriwal posed the question of why the national flag would be raised elsewhere before it is displayed at home. In separate written remarks, he stated that those opposed to the national flag ought to relocate to Pakistan, and separately characterised the situation as nothing less than outright dictatorship.
Questions have arisen over whether displaying the national flag constitutes an offence. Kejriwal's comments, made after the Tiranga rally at Central Park in Connaught Place, attributed the detention of CJP activist Abhijeet Dipke — taken from the residence of NCP-SCP spokesperson Anish Gawande — to political motivation on the part of the Modi government, which he said was acting out of apprehension toward the activists.
Speaking to reporters, Delhi AAP President Saurabh Bharadwaj defended the party's organisational turnout, pointing to prior gatherings in the vicinity of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, and stated that a call had been issued for a Tiranga Yatra, with participants arriving equipped with hundreds of Tricolours. Flag-raising ceremonies were planned at multiple locations throughout Central Delhi.
Bharadwaj told a broadcast outlet that members of the group had stretched a 270-foot Tricolour across the area in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament earlier that morning. Bharadwaj added that displaying one's own national flag within a sovereign country is a practice the group views as entirely acceptable. A speaker posed the question of why citizens displaying their own national flag should be treated as a problem.
Authorities in Central Delhi took approximately 150 people into custody during protests and a planned march called "Lehra Do Tiranga," according to officials. AAP members and party workers joined a group of demonstrators for the Tiranga march held at Central Park in Connaught Place, around the same time tensions were building in the area.
Activists affiliated with the All India Students' Association and Left-aligned parties gathered at a protest near Mandi House, calling on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to step down from his post. More than 6,000 personnel drawn from Delhi Police and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were positioned across the city, with the absence of official authorisation, entry restrictions covering areas including Connaught Place's Central Park, and standing orders against large public gatherings all cited as the basis for the deployment.
Abhijeet Dipke, associated with CJP, was taken into custody by Delhi Police at the home of NCP-SCP spokesperson Anish Gawande. The officer conducting the arrest informed Dipke that he was being taken into preventive custody. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 are currently active across the Connaught Place area.
Two formal notices were handed to Dipke by authorities, who also informed him he was being held. One document served on him took the form of a formal notice drawn up under Section 163 of the BNSS by the New Delhi district authority operating under the Delhi Police Act, prohibiting his entry into Central Park on grounds that public gatherings there were subject to active restrictions. A bond-violation notice from the South-West Delhi district court formed the second document, drawing on an earlier preventive proceeding that had named Dipke, Ashutosh, and Saurav.
All three individuals had been taken into custody at the airport before a court appearance, where they now face accusations of breaching a one-year bond to keep the peace. A gathering of senior officers under Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar took place to review the security plan put in place for the planned 'Lehra Do Tiranga' rally.
A comprehensive traffic advisory has been released, with Additional CP (Traffic) DK Gupta noting that the guidance covers detailed provisions for road users. Neighbourhoods in the vicinity of Connaught Place were identified as likely to experience disruption. Staff members were positioned throughout those areas to manage the flow of vehicles.
Diversions were prepared for activation at short notice in the event of disruptions. Social media platforms were among the channels being monitored. Upon receiving notifications about potential ground-level disruptions, rerouting plans were to be activated to maintain traffic flow. Limiting travel disruptions for commuters was described as the top priority. Travellers were urged to observe the posted traffic advisory and to check for route changes before setting out, as diversions were to be put in place should any disruptions arise.
