Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged what he described as "some difficulties" around Starlink access and intelligence-sharing arrangements with Washington, yet affirmed that the alliance with the United States remains a foundation of Kyiv's position as it contends with ongoing Russian strikes, according to a broadcast news outlet.
During a visit to London on Wednesday, Zelensky urged Elon Musk to restore full access to the Starlink network, which Ukrainian officials have said is operating under restrictions that are hampering their forces in the field. He also set out Kyiv's position on the broader relationship with Washington, telling reporters that Ukraine sought an open, honest, and dependable partnership with the United States, and that the difficulties over both Starlink connectivity and intelligence sharing were matters he wanted addressed directly.
On Wednesday, an official from Ukraine's government told a broadcast news outlet that Starlink data transmission rates had been reduced. Worries have mounted among Ukrainian officials about the country's dependence on the satellite internet network for frontline communications, drone operations, and the movement of military supplies, following reports of access restrictions.
Satellite terminals that Ukraine's armed forces rely on to steer combat drones encountered connectivity problems after restrictions were placed on Starlink services, according to news reports. An insider connected to the defence ministry passed along information indicating that the constraints were disrupting drone operations, with interceptor missions and medium-range strike runs proving particularly affected. Cutbacks to frontline support functions — spanning logistics, reconnaissance, and communications relay networks — were also under way.
Starlink became a cornerstone of battlefield communications for Ukrainian forces after the fighting with Russia widened into a full-scale conflict in February 2022. Orbital links carried by the system allow it to function in locations where ground-based communications prove unstable or prone to interference.
Unmanned aerial systems have taken on a prominent role in the conflict, deployed across tasks ranging from battlefield surveillance and offensive strikes to neutralising airborne threats. Uninterrupted orbital links are of particular importance when autonomous platforms navigate extended ranges or terrain where terrestrial infrastructure cannot reach.
Allegations of Starlink access limits have surfaced at a time when ties between Ukraine and Washington are facing fresh pressure. Reports indicate that a high-ranking Ukrainian official placed responsibility on the United States both for not alerting Kyiv ahead of the Russian strikes and for playing a part in the breakdown of communications.
Starlink, the satellite internet network operated by SpaceX — a space and technology company under Musk's ownership — functions within a broader landscape where Musk maintains a noted relationship with US President Donald Trump.
