Polling data gathered by YouGov — an online research and analytics organisation operating across multiple markets — placed Donald Trump in net unfavourable territory throughout Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, covering six Western European nations in total. Negative views of Trump were recorded across all nations included in the poll, though the survey did not capture whether any countries held mixed or favourable impressions.
Among the countries surveyed, Denmark recorded the deepest concentration of negative opinion toward Trump, with nine in ten Danish participants holding an unfavourable view and just four in every hundred indicating approval. The survey does not explain the drivers behind those numbers, though the Greenland dispute has been identified as one possible contributing element.
Trump put forward a proposal to acquire Greenland from Denmark in 2019. Polling conducted in January 2025 found that most Greenlanders favoured remaining outside United States territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen noted that polling results pointing toward continued close ties between Greenland and Denmark were something she welcomed.
Separate survey data placed support for Trump at around 12% across both France and Spain. Negative views were recorded by roughly 86 out of every 100 people surveyed in Spain, with France not far behind at 79 out of 100.
Diplomatic ties between the United States and Spain have come under pressure in the wake of ongoing military operations carried out by the US and Israel against Iran. Spain withheld authorisation for its military bases to be used in any operations directed at Iran. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the conflict as both unlawful and irresponsible, and Spain subsequently barred US aircraft participating in the hostilities from entering its airspace. Trump raised the possibility of a full trade embargo against Spain, while also pointing to the country's failure to meet NATO's defence spending targets.
A ten-year timeline running to 2035 underpinned a pledge made by NATO member nations in 2025, directing each country to channel five percent of gross domestic product toward defence and related expenditure.
In France, a proposal put forward by Trump to double import duties on French wines and Champagne to 100% has attracted notable notice. Across the United Kingdom, polling found that roughly eight in ten people held a negative view of Trump, with just one in ten taking a positive stance.
Towards the end of September, a group of five men was taken into custody near RAF Fairford, initially on suspicion of breaching the Explosives Act and later on suspicion of plotting a terrorist act. Granted bail, the individuals remained free as the police inquiry moved forward. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham pointed to what he described as "strong indications" of Iranian involvement in the incident, while noting that investigators had not yet reached a final conclusion. Iran, in its own statement, attributed no involvement in the matter to itself.
Across Germany, roughly nine in ten survey participants reported a negative view of Trump, with fewer than one in ten indicating the opposite. Disagreements between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the Trump administration have arisen across a range of policy matters.
Polling conducted in Italy found that roughly eight in ten respondents held a negative view of Trump, with fewer than one in ten expressing approval. Transatlantic relations between Italy and the United States have remained intact, with Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni exchanging messages through public channels on several occasions.
