During the seven-day measurement window spanning late September into early October, Nielsen's streaming rankings placed Wonka's The Golden Ticket — a competition format produced by Netflix — at the head of the table, with audience viewing time totalling just over 1.078 billion minutes across that stretch. Opening on September 23, the programme landed at fifth place in its first week of ratings before climbing to the top position.
Nielsen chart data placed the newcomer ahead of Netflix's East of Eden adaptation — a long-anticipated series that landed in third position when it rolled out on October 1.
Netflix's Wonka-branded production draws its premise from the intellectual property tied to Roald Dahl's 1964 novel, yet the format it adopts — a reality competition rather than a narrative retelling — positions it at some distance from the adaptations that have previously brought that story to audiences. Twelve golden-ticket holders, each having earned a place in the competition through that selection process, found their collective run producing a Rotten Tomatoes entry at the low end of the rating scale — all while vying for the top prize.
Ratings drawn from viewer tallies and critical reviews together put the franchise's newest instalment at a low point across its tracked performance record. On review aggregator tallies, the 1971 release Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory drew approval from 84 percent of critics alongside an 87 percent audience rating, whereas the 2005 version, retitled Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, registered a comparable 83 percent among reviewers but drew markedly lower enthusiasm from general viewers, who rated it at just 51 percent. Audience reception of the Timothée Chalamet-led 2023 musical reached 90%, placing it above the 82% that critics assigned to the same production.
Critic and audience reception scores for Wonka's The Golden Ticket — sitting at 11% and 37% respectively — placed the production at the bottom of the adaptation rankings, below any previously measured entry. Critics who reviewed the reality competition noted that its format fell short of expectations, with several tasks drawing particular scrutiny for their design.
Viewer ratings told one story, yet the top position on the Nielsen charts belonged to it all the same.
The adaptation of East of Eden, with Florence Pugh taking on the role of Cathy Ames, has drawn an approval rating of 86% across both critic and audience tallies.
Wonka's The Golden Ticket is available to stream on Netflix. Rich Kim held the director's chair on the production. This piece is dated September 23, 2026.
