West Bengal Opposition Parties Maintain Distance from Mamata Banerjee's TMC Despite National-Level Overtures

Leaders of the Indian National Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in West Bengal have displayed little appetite for a formal alliance with Trinamool Congress, despite Mamata Banerjee's repeated attempts to build a united front against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state, including direct outreach to the central leadership of both parties. Members of the D.I.A. bloc gathered in New Delhi on Wednesday. Telephone calls between Mamata and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, along with CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby, preceded a measured response from state-level representatives of both parties to her overtures. Sources indicated that while senior figures from both parties expressed willingness to unite opposition groups in a coordinated national effort against what they characterised as the BJP's attempts to sway the Election Commission to its advantage, an electoral alliance between the Congress, the CPI(M), and the TMC to challenge the party's dominance in West Bengal was considered improbable. The CPI(M), which held power in West Bengal alongside the Left Front for three and a half decades before the TMC displaced it in 2011, has been measured in its approach to any formal alliance with Mamata Banerjee's party, wary that such an arrangement might undercut the political footing it has rebuilt on the back of the TMC's recent vote losses and organisational fractures. In recent months, the CPI(M) has positioned itself as a notable opposition party to the BJP, staging demonstrations against the removal of street vendors by police during anti-encroachment operations and pushing back against attempts to bring Hindu nationalist ideology into school curricula. He noted that his party had opposed the TMC's administration in the past and intended to do the same with the BJP's rule going forward. After a TMC-affiliated candidate stepped down from the race following a meeting with the state's BJP chief minister, Mamata announced her support for Milan Pradhan, the Congress contender in the 6 October bypoll in Nandigram — the constituency where her political career had taken root. Revelations of internal divisions within the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls have lent weight to opposition claims of a link between the poll body and the BJP, while Mamata, addressing a rally in Serampore, Hooghly on Saturday, declared that she and the TMC would extend support to any party or group taking on both the ruling party and the Commission, asserting that opposition forces nationwide remained in solidarity. Mamata insisted that transparency in electoral processes was non-negotiable, attributing her party's weak showing earlier in the year to the deletion of hundreds of thousands of names from voter rolls during the Election Commission's special revision drive, while Congress had previously removed her from its membership. The TMC was founded as a political counterweight to the CPI(M), positioning itself against what it characterised as that party's concentration of power and governance excesses. On Sunday, Adhikari asserted that the CPI(M) had forged an alliance with the TMC, a charge he levelled at his former political mentor over attempts to cultivate ties with left-leaning parties.
