During the September–October training camp for the men's national team, Cavan Sullivan and a cluster of younger players drew attention, with Mauricio Pochettino's side now preparing to face Mexico in a fixture expected to provide a clearer indication of where that group stands. Wins over Peru and Chile gave the U.S. men's national team a pair of early results under its new setup.
Pochettino's decision to lean on younger players has shown early returns, with adolescent squad members responsible for half the goals across the opening two matches of the autumn campaign. Two of the three matchups Pochettino has overseen against Mexico have ended in defeat, leaving the USMNT without a victory over El Tri across that stretch.
Saturday night's fixture presents the squad with an opportunity to end a run of losses against their long-standing opponents. Pochettino is anticipated to field a full-strength lineup against Mexico, with several younger players likely filling reserve roles. Several players from the group are expected to log meaningful time after the break, with two among them lined up to make their debut in a derby fixture.
With his 17th birthday just days behind him, Sullivan is anticipated to receive meaningful playing time against El Tri. Dest is expected to operate along the right flank, leaving the left side open for the winger to take up a starting position. Deployed on the left flank, he would likely face Jorge Sánchez at right back — a defender whose tournament form was noted, yet one whose record includes lapses arriving at inopportune moments.
Alvarado, who lines up on the right wing for El Tri, has shown a willingness to track back and help Sánchez deal with pressure from opposing wide players, adding a defensive dimension to his attacking role. Against Peru and Chile, Sullivan's performances carried genuine potential, yet a right-side deployment would place him directly across from Jesús Gallardo, a player earning his 131st international appearance.
Hall, a teenager, is pencilled in at striker and faces El Tri's central defensive pairing. Across 15 outings in 2026, the Mexican defense has surrendered just seven goals in total, with England standing as the only opponent to find the net more than once against that backline. Reyes and Vásquez are lined up to form the defensive backbone, while a fitness concern leaves Montes's availability in doubt.
Four consecutive shutout performances defined Mexico's opening run at the tournament, a stretch in which Raúl Rangel faced only six attempts that required a save. Colombia's attackers tested the Mexican defensive unit only twice with efforts that troubled the goalkeeper during that fixture.
Two goals and an assist across his opening pair of international appearances have given Hall a promising start, though he now faces a defensive unit that has ranked among the strongest in the region over the past twelve months. Teenage forward Justin Ellis, should he be brought on as a substitute, would face a test no less demanding than that of his peers.
Pochettino's squad — a group that spans attacking options, midfielders like Adri Mehmeti and Brooklyn Raines, and defensive players such as Frankie Westfield and Peyton Miller — faces the prospect of periods in which Mexico takes control of the match. Adapting to the pace set by the Chile match posed a visible challenge for both Mehmeti and Raines.
In three of the four matches preceding the 2025 Gold Cup final, Mexico had largely dictated the tempo and approach against Colombia, Ecuador, and England — a pattern that carried through into the championship fixture against the USMNT. Gilberto Mora, a young Mexican player, has drawn attention for his ability to pose a recurring attacking threat against the USMNT.
Among the players who have lined up against Mexico — Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, and Antonee Robinson among them — several carry the added distinction of having been on rosters that recorded victories over that opponent. Players with longer track records in such environments have historically provided support to newer squad members, communicating during matches, remaining accessible, and offering input when younger players encounter difficulty.
