At a time when U.K. intelligence agencies had put out advisories about Russian attempts to influence the country's elections, Burnham's comments entered the public conversation. At a press briefing, Burnham recounted a Berlin conversation with Friedrich Merz the week prior, in which the German chancellor raised the question of links between the Alternative for Germany party and Russia — pointing to what he characterised as Russian financial flows toward the party — and also expressed concern that information originating in Russia had been finding its way into German political discourse.
