Midfielder Tyler Adams has been named captain of the U.S. men's national soccer team, with head coach Mauricio Pochettino announcing the appointment on Friday, Oct. 2, as the squad directs its focus toward the 2030 World Cup cycle.
Adams previously held the captaincy during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Pochettino said he had deliberately waited to name a replacement captain until Tim Ream — who wore the armband during the 2026 World Cup — officially announced his retirement from international football, a transition marked by a pre-match tribute ceremony before the team's 4-2 win over Chile in Ream's hometown of St. Louis.
Pochettino described the captaincy appointment as an integral part of launching a new era for the national team and expressed support for Adams, saying the honour was one Adams had earned. He said the relationship between the two had developed positively over the preceding two years.
Pochettino said the two had spoken at length, describing Adams as someone who understands what is expected of him and carries himself in a way that reflects the values and identity of the national program, and as the kind of player and person capable of guiding the team through the period ahead.
Adams, for his part, said his development both on and off the field had moved forward considerably since the 2022 cycle — a stretch during which he took on a central role at Premier League club Bournemouth and remained a consistent presence for the national side when fit. He acknowledged that while the 2022 squad had been among the younger groups at that tournament, the years since had given him room to mature in multiple areas of his game and life.
Adams said conversations with Ream ahead of the most recent World Cup, combined with observations drawn from captains who had led him at club level, shaped how he approached the role. He added that wearing the armband would not alter his character or the way he carries himself as a leader.
Antonee Robinson wore the captain's armband in the team's previous outing. Adams is scheduled to take on that role when the national team faces Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 3, and has said he intends to steer the group toward a winning culture and continue building on what the team has been working to establish.
The United States wraps up two autumn friendlies on Oct. 6 against Canada, after which the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals are scheduled for November.
