Sonay Kartal reached the Wuhan Open final after defeating Jelena Ostapenko in two sets, both decided by tiebreak at 7-6. The victory came only three tournaments into Kartal's return from a six-month absence through injury.
Ostapenko mounted a sustained challenge throughout the match, with chances to close out both the opening set and the second going unconverted. Kartal took both tiebreaks to advance to the deepest run of her career.
Describing the contest as likely among the most demanding she had faced, the 24-year-old expressed satisfaction with both the outcome and her own display. She said her reading of how Ostapenko would play before the first serve proved accurate over the course of the match, and acknowledged that Ostapenko's game could reach a level where opponents found little answer to it, adding that adapting to those stretches was simply part of competing against her.
Kartal described the performance as among the finest of her career, noting that her third competitive appearance following injury — and the result she posted there — marked a point she had visualised throughout her time away from the sport.
Ranked 170th at the time, she told journalists she planned to rest and enjoy herself the following day. Asked what message she would give fans in Wuhan, she said her answer had been the same each time she had spoken to the press: the courts there offered a playing environment she had not encountered elsewhere, and the crowd atmosphere throughout her matches had made the entire run a pleasure. She expressed gratitude toward those who had turned out to support her and said she hoped to count on their presence again the following day.
The victory over Ostapenko made Kartal the first British woman to reach the Wuhan Open final. Her position on the Live WTA rankings has climbed to 50th, and the British number one designation is due to pass back to her when the standings refresh on Monday. A title this week would lift her ranking to as high as 36th, a position she has not previously held.
Speaking on a broadcast news channel, former tennis professional Colin Fleming described Kartal's semi-final victory as a genuinely outstanding result. Fleming noted that Kartal's composure throughout the contest — her capacity to remain anchored in each point rather than be swept up by the occasion — proved the deciding factor against Ostapenko, who drove 50 winners past her across the match yet still failed to take a set. Fleming added that the broad grin Kartal wore at the finish was the most expressive of the afternoon, and that her place in a WTA 1000 final stood as a clear measure of how far the run had carried her, with no indication yet that the momentum was fading.
Kartal is scheduled to face either Iga Swiatek or Maja Chwalinska in Sunday's Wuhan Open final. A source was quoted as saying she is performing at a high level and stands a strong chance of lifting the trophy. Kartal holds no WTA Tour head-to-head record against either of those two opponents.
