Sonay Kartal secured a place in the Wuhan Open final on Saturday, putting her one match away from claiming a first WTA 1000 trophy. Across two hours and 12 minutes of play, Kartal defeated Jelena Ostapenko, the world No. 34, by a scoreline of 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5), taking both sets.
Ranked fifth in Britain, Kartal spent six months on the sidelines with a back problem before returning earlier this month. She has conceded only one set across her matches heading into Sunday's final against either Iga Swiatek or Maja Chwalinska.
Down 4-1 in both sets against Ostapenko, Kartal fought back to win on each occasion. Speaking to journalists afterwards, she described the contest as among the most demanding of her career and said she had gone into the match with a thorough understanding of how her opponent played.
She acknowledged that Ostapenko can reach a level that is nearly impossible to counter, and described her own mental composure throughout the match as among the strongest she has produced across her playing career.
Kartal said she had envisioned playing the match before her back injury sidelined her, and described returning to Wuhan for her third tournament appearance and reaching the final as a notable personal milestone. She added that she planned to recover and savour every moment the following day. The run came after she had sat out most of the season, including the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, due to the injury.
Her ranking slipped to 170th on the world tour during her time away from competition, down from the 44th-place position she held at her peak in July of last year. At the China Open earlier this month, her competitive comeback ended in the third round, where Alina Charaeva took the victory.
At the Wuhan tournament, Kartal's path to the last four included victories over Kalinina, ninth-seeded Bencic, 15th-seeded Paolini, and fifth seed Svitolina.
Ostapenko held three set points early in the match, though Kartal fought back to claim the opening set. Ostapenko worked her way back into the match across the second set, converting three set points to draw level. A tiebreak decided the outcome once more, with Kartal advancing to the final.
Kartal has joined Johanna Konta as one of only two British women to contest a WTA 1000 final, a milestone confirmed by broadcast coverage. Konta reached that stage on three separate occasions.
No player seeded lower than Kartal had advanced to a WTA 1000 final in the more than three decades since that tournament tier took shape in 1990.
