Rahul Gandhi Calls for Removal of Chief Election Commissioner and Current Government

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated on Saturday that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Modi government would both be removed, after which democratic institutions would be restored. Gandhi made these remarks in a post on X and in a speech to INDIA bloc MPs, following controversy over internal objections raised by two Election Commissioners regarding electoral roll decisions.

At a Saturday gathering, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi put forward the view that both Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the current government would eventually be removed from their posts, a development he framed as a necessary precondition for the restoration of democratic institutions. Gandhi argued on Friday that the country's problems extend well beyond the role of Chief Election Commissioner Kumar, that the present government needs to be voted out, and that opposition pressure over recent days has, in his assessment, left the administration on unstable ground. Speaking before INDIA bloc MPs assembled at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, Rahul Gandhi put forward the case that parliamentary pressure from the opposition over recent days had unsettled the ruling dispensation, adding that the row over Gyanesh Kumar reflected a deeper problem within institutions — one that, in his assessment, called for a change of government — and expressing the view that continued resistance of the kind already mounted in parliament held the potential to bring the administration to an end.
