Covering all 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab, the state's finalised voter rolls now place the total number of eligible electors at just over 2.01 crore, a count arrived at after the Chief Electoral Officer's office wrapped up a multi-month Special Intensive Revision exercise.
Published on Monday, the updated electoral roll shows the total number of registered voters has fallen to roughly 2,01,00,000 — a drop of approximately 13.6 lakh, or about 6.33 per cent, against the 2,14,61,043 figure recorded before the revision exercise got under way.
Four categories of voter-roll irregularities — people who had died, those who had relocated permanently, electors who were absent, and names appearing more than once — formed the basis of a records-cleaning drive.
Voter registrations recorded in the completed electoral roll outnumber those carried in the draft version that went out on 13 August. Between the draft electoral roll and the published final version, the total count of registered voters climbed by 7,06,292 names — moving from 1,93,94,435 to 2,01,00,727, a gain that works out to 3.64 per cent. A total of 7,97,263 voters were added to the final electoral roll, according to a statement from Chief Electoral Officer Anindita Mitra.
The adjustment was timed to land before Punjab's Assembly election, pencilled in for February 2027. A notification dated 14 May carried the Election Commission of India's order mandating a Special Intensive Revision of Punjab's voter rolls.
The revision programme got under way on 25 June, with Punjab assigned to its third phase. Between 13 August and 12 September, anyone wishing to lodge claims or objections had the opportunity to do so, with the notice and disposal stage then remaining open through to 8 October.
Voters whose registration details either failed to align with existing records or showed inconsistencies in need of confirmation received formal notification at that stage of the process. Notices dispatched by the Chief Electoral Officer's office reached 35,49,036 voters, and of that pool, 86,038 were eventually found to be ineligible.
Punjab's Phase-III Special Intensive Revision exercise got underway on 25 June 2026, following a directive issued by the Election Commission. Door-to-door canvassing concluded ahead of 13 August, when electoral authorities released a provisional voter register carrying just under 1.94 crore registered names.
A team of 19 Roll Observers, DEOs, and the CEO carried out on-the-ground inspections and verification work throughout the claims and objections stage that followed. Formal notices reached approximately 35,49,036 voters whose electoral records contained either unmapped entries or data discrepancies.
