Unrest persisted in Adoor following a Saturday night confrontation involving members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU), Youth Congress, and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) announcing a planned march to the local police station. Congress functionaries and CPM representatives exchanged accusations across social media platforms in the aftermath of the incident.
The party contended that officers handled the confrontation in a manner that favoured one side over the other. Heightened police deployments remained in place across several areas, while online exchanges of threats between the two groups added to the strain on law enforcement resources.
Participants in the planned march are set to gather at 10am on Thursday.
On Facebook, Rahul Mamkootathil — a former MLA — addressed comments that opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan had made during the assembly session. Mamkootathil stated that day-to-day operations of the Congress unit in Adoor rest with the local MLA alongside KPCC, DCC, and block-level functionaries, and that policing matters fall under the purview of the police rather than himself. He also pledged solidarity with fellow party members and noted that he had long served as a bearer of the party's banner.
Raising the DYFI and SFI demonstrations tied to allegations that funds were drawn from Veena T, the daughter of Vijayan, Mamkootathil put forward queries about her relationship to the CPM and the grounds on which party workers had encountered both violence and police action. In reply to Vijayan's assertion that his own past did not need revisiting, Mamkootathil stated that a continued exchange of that kind could bring Vijayan's record — along with the conduct of those serving in an advisory capacity — into public view. His remarks indicated that Vijayan, along with members of his family, would need to pursue bail in connection with a matter they are reportedly linked to.
In a separate social media post, Congress member Amjath Adoor catalogued what he described as a series of violent incidents attributed to CPM and DYFI workers stretching back roughly ten years. Among the reported incidents were the toppling of Congress party flagpoles and an assault on the party's office near Kacherichantha, where approximately 100 chairs along with portraits depicting Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi were said to have sustained damage. His post also covered accusations of violence targeting Congress party members during cooperative bank elections, including the 2018 contest at Adoor Urban Bank.
