Pakistan Chosen to Lead New Developing-Country Debt Platform Despite Ongoing Reliance on External Financing
Pakistan has been chosen to lead a new platform for developing-country borrowers, with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb appointed as leader for the 2026–27 term. The selection was made at the platform's inaugural governing council meeting in Bangkok, held alongside the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings. The platform aims to promote cooperation on debt management, share economic reform experiences, and explore new development financing instruments. Pakistan's external debt stood at $138.85 billion in Q2 2026, while the country recently secured a staff-level agreement with the IMF for approximately $1.21 billion in additional financing.
