Protests organised by the Cockroach Janta Party moved into a second day across the capital on Sunday, with a substantial police deployment in place. As demonstrators advanced toward Jantar Mantar raising slogans, upward of 200 people were detained, with several visibly escorted onto police buses.
Among those taken into custody on Sunday were CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, along with student leaders Neha Bora and Aishe Ghosh. The demonstrations centred on calls for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to vacate his position.
Police buses were used to detain members of several student organisations — the Students' Federation of India, the All India Students' Association, and the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan among them.
A crowd of protesters moved along the Inner Circle at Connaught Place before pressing on toward Rajiv Chowk. People making their way from the RK Ashram Marg Metro station were also taken into custody. Authorities reported that upwards of 40 individuals taking part in the protest were detained in the vicinity of the station.
According to the SFI, a large number of its members were apprehended and transported to Surajmal Stadium in Nangloi. The organisation also put forward accounts of its leaders being treated roughly while in police custody, with Brittas reportedly left at the roadside having sustained an injury.
Police took AISA president Neha Bora into custody at a point close to Vijay Chowk. According to the Citizens for Justice and Peace, those detained included medical professionals who had been demonstrating near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib alongside other protesters.
Footage circulating across social media platforms captured KYS members conducting a waterborne protest from boats positioned near Nigambodh Ghat. Demonstrators carrying placards converged on the area, directing their collective voice at removing the chief election commissioner from office. A group of the organisation's members also gathered to hold a protest at Connaught Place.
Police were positioned at multiple points around the city, and a number of people were taken into custody before gatherings could form near Jantar Mantar.
Delhi Police filed twenty FIRs in connection with the CJP demonstration held on Saturday against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Among the charges filed are those relating to attacks on law enforcement officers and interference with officials carrying out their duties.
A court ordered the release of three CJP members who had been taken into custody on a preventive basis, each posting a Rs 50,000 surety bond to secure their freedom. On Sunday, CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka announced that the organisation's leadership intended to visit Delhi Police on Monday to request a scheduled date for a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar, one day after three of the group's senior figures had been held at the airport before a planned rally could take place.
