Novak Djokovic has disclosed that an undisclosed health issue has been affecting him away from public view. Making his first competitive appearance since a first-round departure at the US Open, Djokovic dropped the opening set before steadying himself with a commanding tiebreak, ultimately taking control to defeat Yunchaokete Bu 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2.
Djokovic's 2026 campaign has posed its share of difficulties on court, though a run through to the Australian Open final gave the year an encouraging opening. Pressure on him to walk away from the sport intensified following his first-round departure at the US Open, yet he has shown no indication of stepping back, with a 25th Grand Slam title still the target driving his continued participation.
Djokovic disclosed that his struggles during the Grand Slam calendar were not limited to the challenges posed by his rivals on court. Following the victory against Bu, Djokovic spoke about a physical issue that had been affecting his performance throughout the season. Without going into specifics, he noted that a detailed account would likely read as self-justification or grievance rather than straightforward explanation.
Djokovic described the current year as one marked by ongoing personal difficulties tied to a handful of specific challenges. He described his focus as finding varied approaches to maintaining adequate physical fitness and overall health, with the goal of being able to take the court and hold his own against whoever stands on the other side of the net. "If he plays better than me on the day, then fair enough," he said.
Djokovic's quarter-final opponent will be determined by the outcome of the match between Shang Juncheng and Alexander Zverev, a two-time Grand Slam winner.
Djokovic told reporters that, from a physical standpoint, the bulk of his competitive appearances throughout the year had put him under considerable strain. He drew a distinction between stamina and the issue in question, stating that what stands at issue has nothing to do with stamina, and that confusion between the two tends to arise. He indicated the matter is health-related and noted a preference for keeping it undisclosed while working alongside his team to understand it fully.
Reflecting on the third set, Djokovic noted that a breakthrough had come through — something he described as an unexpected experience relative to the rest of his year up to that point. His condition had improved during the match. "By the closing stages of the second set and throughout the third, my legs felt noticeably fresher than they had at the outset of the match," he said.
Djokovic expressed a desire to be in reasonable physical shape for the next competition and those that follow, pointing to the preparation work currently under way. He also noted that competing through both physical and mental hardship pulls focus away from tactical awareness — resources that would otherwise go toward reading an opponent and working out how to break through their game.
