Nigeria Records First Ebola Case as Regional Outbreak Spreads Across East and West Africa

Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case involving a woman admitted to a private hospital in Abuja after traveling from Uganda. The outbreak, which began in the Democratic Republic of Congo in May, has since spread to Kenya, Uganda, and now Nigeria, with health officials describing it as the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record.

Health authorities verified that a patient — who had travelled through Uganda before reaching Nigeria — carried the country's first documented Ebola infection, with the individual having been admitted to a privately run facility in Abuja. Three countries now find themselves tracking the same pathogen — Nigeria joining Kenya and Uganda after the disease moved out of DR Congo, where cases were first recorded in May — with public health monitoring data pointing to a rate of spread that has no documented parallel.
