NATO Chief Mark Rutte Urges UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham to Increase Defence Spending
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham at 10 Downing Street and delivered a speech at the Ditchley Foundation's annual lecture in Oxfordshire, calling on the UK to meet NATO defence spending commitments. UK defence spending is projected at 2.7 per cent of GDP by 2027, falling short of the 3 per cent interim NATO target for 2030. Burnham has declined to reduce welfare spending to fund defence increases. Unite union leader Sharon Graham also called for increased defence investment as part of an industrial strategy. NATO allies have agreed to a 5 per cent of GDP target by 2035.
