Michigan Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed Advocates for ICE Abolition

Michigan Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), framing his argument around constitutional principles and the rule of law. El-Sayed previously referred to individuals without legal documentation as 'undocumented Americans' during a 2020 podcast, and has highlighted what he described as contradictions in how undocumented workers were treated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the podcast, El-Sayed contended that immigration policy had functioned as a tool of political leverage under the Trump administration, citing the winding back of DACA protections, entry restrictions on predominantly Muslim-majority countries, the public charge regulation, detention centres along the southern border, and enforcement actions by immigration agencies — measures he described as having tangible consequences for individuals with personal goals, fears, and lives, a number of whom had come to the country in pursuit of greater opportunity. El-Sayed observed that, unless a person is of Native American or Black heritage, their own ancestors likely came to this country under comparable circumstances, and that undocumented people represent some of the most exposed members of society — a reality underscored throughout the pandemic, when their work was classified as essential while their legal standing remained unrecognised. El-Sayed also noted that the outbreak had affected undocumented residents, and in a conversation with podcaster Evan James, he argued that immigration enforcement bodies such as ICE ought to be dissolved, characterising that position as a moderate and reasonable one. El-Sayed noted that the issue pertains to a different border entirely, meaning it has no relevance to immigration matters.
