Leeds United Defeat Newcastle 4-1 to Climb to Third in Premier League Table

Leeds United defeated Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road in the 2025/26 Premier League season, with goals from Lewis Miley (own goal), Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Noah Okafor. The result moves Leeds to third in the table with eight points from four games, while Newcastle slip to 12th. The match was the first defeat for Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, whose young squad struggled without key summer departures. Prominent football figures reacted strongly to the scale of Newcastle's defeat.

Goals from Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Noah Okafor, along with a Lewis Miley own goal, secured a 4-0 victory for Leeds United at Elland Road, leaving Matthias Jaissle without a point in his opening fixture as Newcastle head coach. Despite losing head coach Eddie Howe and players Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali in the build-up to the new campaign, Newcastle displayed some positive early indicators under Jaissle. Newcastle chose to bring in younger, unproven players to fill gaps left by departures rather than pursuing established names, and were outperformed on the day by a more experienced Leeds side, notwithstanding the substantial financial backing available through the club's sovereign wealth fund ownership. Nico Gonzalez was substituted off before the 20-minute mark following a head injury evaluation, a setback that arrived early for the visiting team. Leaping to connect with Justin's delivery, Calvert-Lewin directed a header onto the ball, which glanced off Bogle and into the net, with the right-back awarded the goal. Leeds head coach Daniel Farke said the late goal that denied his side a four-nil winning margin — a scoreline the club had not recorded in the top flight since 2001 — was the kind of thing that would unsettle any manager, though he was clear it did nothing to diminish what his players had produced on the pitch. Every result carries some degree of imperfection. After beginning the Premier League season unbeaten — with draws against Liverpool and Bournemouth followed by a 2-0 win away at Tottenham Hotspur — Newcastle United suffered a four-goal defeat, a result that arrives as the club heads into what many observers describe as a period of transition. Carragher, who moved into punditry after his playing career, told viewers during a television appearance that Newcastle could take some positives from the outcome, even though the club had faced a testing night in the spotlight. The team were dominated throughout by a higher-division opponent. The head coach characterised the result as a substantial loss, leaving Newcastle on five points and 12th in the standings, separated from higher-placed clubs only by goal difference.
