During her debut at the White House briefing podium on Tuesday, October 13, press secretary Katie Zacharia drew attention after a verbal slip in which she referred to President Donald Trump as her husband, a mistake she caught and corrected within moments.
The slip took place while a question about balancing the press secretary position with raising four children was underway. Pausing mid-sentence, she corrected herself — noting that she had nearly called her husband her president — before returning to her account of the family's trip to Washington.
With Katie at the podium, Trump told those present he believed she had done well. That exchange took place on Tuesday, October 13, four days into Katie's tenure following Trump's announcement of her appointment.
When asked how she intended to balance the position with her family remaining in California, Katie responded by first acknowledging her husband's support, then noting that the two of them are raising four children together — three boys among them — ranging in age from six to twelve. Once the confusion was sorted out, she noted that her spouse had taken all four children to Washington to mark two family birthdays, and that the family planned to relocate to the capital.
Around 14 minutes into the briefing, three news outlets had put their questions to Katie before she directed reporters toward the president's upcoming departure on a campaign trip.
Her husband, Tyler Zacharia, holds dual roles at 2521 Entertainment, serving as both a film producer and the company's chief operating officer. The two have been in a partnership tracing back to at least 2016.
At the briefing, Katie told those present that a six-year period at home raising her children — spanning 2014 through 2020 — had preceded her return to the workforce. She also pointed to guidance received from her predecessor Karoline Leavitt during the transition period, while separately telling reporters that her children would be included in her professional life as often as circumstances allow.
Her path to the position ran through a stint as a communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group. Her professional background also includes a public affairs role at the Department of Homeland Security, as well as on-air appearances on two news outlets.
Zacharia completed her undergraduate studies at Pepperdine University in 2007 and her legal training there in 2011. Speaking to reporters gathered for her introduction, she described taking on the role of White House Press Secretary as a privilege she held in high regard.
