Kapil Sibal Responds to Rajnath Singh Over 'Regime Change' Remarks

Rajya Sabha Independent MP Kapil Sibal responded to Union Minister Rajnath Singh after Singh accused the Congress party and its allies of seeking a 'regime change' inspired by Bangladesh through youth-driven protests in New Delhi. Sibal countered by asserting that it is the people who want a change in government, referencing anti-corruption protests that he said previously helped bring the ruling party to power.

On Saturday, Kapil Sibal, a Rajya Sabha member, took issue with Union Minister Rajnath Singh's characterisation of the Congress party as pursuing "regime change," contending instead that popular demand — not partisan strategy — lay behind calls for a new administration and that the current government had exhausted its mandate. Those remarks from Sibal came a day after Singh addressed Congress and its coalition partners, putting forward the view that street protests in the capital over contested election results were an effort to bring down the government in a manner comparable to events in Bangladesh, and that the energy of young people was being directed towards generating instability. In a post on X, Sibal put a direct question to Rajnath Singh, asking whether the defence minister truly held the view that Congress was working to bring down the government through methods akin to those seen in the Bangladesh situation. Framing those rallies held under an anti-corruption cause as the force that handed electoral victory to one party elevates a disputed interpretation to the level of established fact. Questions of institutional capture, manipulated electoral rolls, and condoned corrupt conduct were openly raised during that period. A push for prompt withdrawal came from the MP who holds no party affiliation. Speaking the day prior, Singh put forward the position that Congress and its network of allied parties and affiliated bodies were channelling the energy of young people away from constructive national purposes and toward political instability — and, further, that those same young people were being mobilised as instruments in what he described as a concerted effort by Congress and its partners to engineer a change of government along the lines of events that unfolded in Bangladesh.
