Iran's President Pezeshkian Reiterates No Nuclear Weapons Pursuit Amid US Tensions

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on October 16 that Iran does not seek to develop nuclear weapons and called opposing claims a lie. Speaking at the COP17 biodiversity conference in Yerevan, he met with Georgian and Armenian leaders, urging the US to pursue dialogue rather than coercion. US President Donald Trump separately stated the conflict with Iran would end soon and that Tehran would not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan — where he had held talks with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on 16 October — Pezeshkian stated that developing nuclear weapons plays no role in his country's plans, and he described claims to the contrary as inaccurate, pointing to the recorded position of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the prohibition of such weapons as the basis for that view, as set out in a statement released by his office. He attributed harm from the sanctions to effects felt both domestically and across other nations, adding that a sustained course along those lines stood to place further pressure on countries around the world. Speaking to reporters, Trump described the conflict with Iran as nearing its end, said energy prices would stabilise once the fighting stopped, and stated that Tehran would not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Speaking to reporters, Trump predicted the matter would work itself out before long and that household energy bills would fall at a pace people would notice.
