Voter registration in Indiana is required to be completed before the cutoff date for anyone planning to participate in the November general election. Indiana law sets the registration deadline at no fewer than 29 days ahead of any given election date, placing the filing cutoff for the 2026 general election on Oct. 5 of that year.
Those registering in person are required to do so at their county's voter registration office before it closes. Marion County residents face a closing time of 4:30 p.m., according to Indy.gov. Online and mail-in voter registration forms are required to reach the election office — or carry a postmark — no later than 11:59 p.m., with the general election falling on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Voting locations are scheduled to accept ballots throughout a twelve-hour window on Election Day, running from 6 a.m. through the 6 p.m. close.
To cast a ballot in Indiana, a person is required to hold United States citizenship, maintain residency within the state, and have lived in their voting precinct for at least 30 days ahead of Election Day. Voters are also required to be 18 years of age or older, though a 17-year-old who will turn 18 by Election Day may register in advance. Those serving a prison sentence following a criminal conviction are not eligible to vote. People serving sentences under parole, probation, or home detention arrangements retain their right to cast a ballot.
Anyone casting a ballot in person is required to present an accepted form of photo identification, such as an Indiana Driver's License or another government-issued document. The Secretary of State's office notes that an Indiana driver's license, photo ID card, military credential, or U.S. passport will meet the requirement for most identification purposes. A new Indiana law removes college-issued identification cards from the list of accepted documents at polling stations. Full details on voter photo identification requirements are available through the Indiana Secretary of State's elections portal at www.in.gov/sos/elections/voter-information/photo-id-law.
Hoosiers looking to register, update, or confirm their electoral enrollment can do so through the state's dedicated online portal at IndianaVoters.in.gov. Eligible Indiana residents can also complete in-person registration at the voter registration office serving their county. To check registration status or find a polling place, residents can visit IndianaVoters.in.gov or reach the helpline at 1-866-IN-1-VOTE.
Those wishing to take part in the 2026 General Election can secure their place on the electoral roll by completing a voter registration form and posting it to the relevant elections office ahead of the deadline. Voter registration forms are available to Indiana residents through the Secretary of State's website, as well as at township trustee offices and Bureau of Motor Vehicles branches throughout the state. Residents of Marion County can pick up voter registration forms at any local library branch. Postal addresses for county election offices or the state election division are available through IndianaVoters.in.gov.
Residents of Indiana are advised to place completed voter registration paperwork in the mail by Monday, Sept. 28, giving it a full week to arrive before the Oct. 5 cutoff.
