Nifty ended Tuesday's trading session above the 22,700 mark, lifted by the information technology sector after HCL Technologies posted quarterly results that exceeded expectations. Equities swung between gains and losses throughout the day before ultimately holding above the flatline for the bulk of the session after shedding their early declines.
Trading momentum held through the closing hour after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman offered remarks on both the long-term capital gains tax and the securities transaction tax, drawing a broadly favourable response from market participants. By the close of trading, the Sensex had added 1,109.10 points — a gain of 1.54 percent — to finish at 73,033.78, while the Nifty climbed 358.60 points, or 1.60 percent, settling at 22,721.95.
Midcap stocks added 0.7 percent on the day, while smallcap shares finished little changed — both segments of the wider market posted gains yet trailed the headline benchmark indices.
On the Nifty's advancing side, HCL Technologies, TCS, Shriram Finance, Tech Mahindra, and Infosys posted the session's strongest moves upward, while Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Max Healthcare, Power Grid Corp, and Maruti Suzuki ended the day in negative territory.
Of the broader sectoral landscape, only Energy and Pharma finished lower on the day, while every other index posted gains — led by Information Technology, which climbed 5 percent, with Metal, PSU Bank, Auto, Consumer Durables, and Realty each notching advances of roughly 1 percent.
More than 160 listed counters — among them Medplus Health, Tube Investment, Max Healthcare, Maruti Suzuki, Power Grid Corp, Gujarat Energy, Avenue Supermarts, IOC, Vedanta Aluminium, Balkrishna Industries, Reliance Industries, Ramco Cements, Vishal Mega Mart, Bata India, Swiggy, Voltas, Jupiter Wagons, and HUL — registered prices not seen since the same point a year earlier, placing each at its annual floor.
Aarati Industries equity climbed 2.5 percent on the back of a decade-long dedicated manufacturing and supply agreement the firm signed with an unnamed global speciality chemicals group. Shares of RBL Bank retreated 7.5 percent on the day results were published, even though its standalone net profit had expanded by 170 percent against the prior year's figure, while Plastiblends India shed 8 percent of its market value despite posting a 43 percent rise in profit to Rs 10.65 crore.
A partnership agreement between Karur Vysya Bank and Zurich Kotak General Insurance Company pushed the bank's stock up by 2 percent on the day the deal was announced. Vikran Engineering's share price climbed 13 percent on the back of a Rs 2,941.19 crore term loan facility that its subsidiary secured through an agreement with the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA).
A 2 percent drop in Polycab India's share price followed the National Stock Exchange of India's move to remove the stock from its equity derivatives segment. Quarterly results from HCL Technologies showed consolidated net profit climbing 21 percent against the year-earlier figure to reach Rs 5,132 crore, a disclosure that sent the company's stock up by 8 percent on the day.
Trader confidence in Indian stock markets drew a lift from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's indication that the government remains open to consulting stakeholders on a possible rollback of the long-term capital gains levy. No formal proposal has yet been put forward, though any shifts in policy hold the potential to influence confidence among investors and participation in equity markets.
Quarter-by-quarter profit results are expected to continue driving stock movements at both the index and individual-company level. A revised IMF projection — lifting India's FY27 output growth target to 7 percent from an earlier 6.4 percent — has added to the outlook for household and business spending.
Brent crude slipped about 2 percent to trade near US$104.5 a barrel, while the rupee strengthened to Rs 95.4 to the dollar — a gain supported by a cluster of central bank measures that included opening a dedicated dollar facility for oil marketing companies and tightening restrictions on forex derivative transactions, steps designed to ease speculative activity in the foreign exchange market and reduce pressure on spot dollar availability.
