Over 51,000 young people received job appointment letters from the central government at the 20th Rozgar Mela on Saturday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the new hires and calling on them to carry out their duties with honesty, efficiency, and a commitment to public service. Notifications of the appointments were delivered via video link across 45 venues holding simultaneous events.
New hires are set to be placed across a range of federal ministries and departments, spanning areas such as taxation, finance, rail, internal affairs, public health, and the armed forces. With this batch, the cumulative tally of appointment letters distributed under the Rozgar Mela scheme has reached approximately 12.75 lakh, per government figures.
Addressing the new recruits and their families, Modi attributed the accomplishment to the dedication of the trainees alongside the support and sacrifices made by their loved ones. He tied the new recruits' entry into public service to the nation's 2047 development target, stating they would have a part to play in building a prosperous and self-sufficient India.
He noted that public trust represented the administration's greatest asset and that the behaviour of individual staff members could directly influence how citizens perceived their government. Retirees awaiting pensions, students dependent on scholarships, and farmers seeking welfare support typically interact with the state through frontline officials, Modi observed, telling new appointees that their conduct, reliability, integrity, and effectiveness would shape those interactions, and urging them to address the barriers that citizens — including their own relatives — had experienced when navigating public services.
He further urged them to factor in the ambitions of younger generations when making administrative choices and to dismantle obstacles that hinder innovation. He linked the administration's job creation initiatives to broader efforts aimed at equipping young people with skills suited to an evolving economy.
The National Education Policy, Skill India, the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, and broadened apprenticeship pathways were among the initiatives he referenced as efforts to bring educational outcomes and workforce competencies into closer alignment with industry needs. The PM-SETU scheme, which aims to upgrade 1,000 government industrial training institutes through a ₹60,000 crore outlay and expanded private sector involvement, was referenced in the address.
Around half of the country's formally registered startups are based in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, he noted, pointing to broader entrepreneurial and employment activity spreading beyond major urban centres. The Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, backed by a budget of approximately ₹1 lakh crore, was outlined by Modi as a scheme to generate fresh employment, offering incentives of as much as ₹15,000 to those entering the workforce for the first time. Approximately two crore first-time job seekers are projected to receive support through the programme.
Pointing to a 7.8% expansion in GDP during the opening quarter of the current fiscal year, along with roughly 12% growth in investment, he described the economy as gaining traction. He additionally highlighted bilateral trade deals with approximately 40 nations, noting that these arrangements had the potential to unlock markets and forge partnerships for domestic business owners while generating fresh employment pathways.
He emphasised that embracing technological advancement and a commitment to ongoing learning would be key to strengthening governance and public administration. Speaking about Mission Karmayogi, he noted that over 1.7 crore public sector workers had enrolled on the Karmayogi platform, which delivers training modules aimed at enhancing capabilities and building familiarity with new technologies and administrative systems.
At the 20th Rozgar Mela, job distribution was paired with an appeal for greater administrative accountability. He called on the newly appointed staff to view government work as a form of service to the nation and to perform their responsibilities with competence, honesty, and a focus on the needs of citizens.
