India Raises Financial Support for National Sports Federations to Rs 50 Crore for International Events

India's Sports Ministry has revised its Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations, raising the financial support ceiling for hosting international events from Rs 2 crore to Rs 50 crore. The updated guidelines also include up to Rs 50 crore for the conduct of National Games and are aligned with India's 2036 Olympic bid and the 2039 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.

Under revised operational guidelines released by the Sports Ministry on Friday, each National Sports Federation may draw up to Rs 50 crore in government funding toward hosting international competitions on home soil. Under the previous arrangement, national sports federations could receive funding of as much as Rs two crore to host international competitions on home soil. The updated framework, the Ministry noted, ties financial backing for National Sports Federations hosting international events — with allocations reaching up to Rs 50 crore per event, calibrated against factors such as the event's scale, the number of countries involved, and total athlete participation — to the country's broader sporting ambitions, including the bids for the 2036 Olympics and the 2039 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. According to a ministry release, a dedicated Committee under the chairmanship of the Secretary (Sports) will be responsible for evaluating proposals put forward by National Sports Federations. The updated scheme sets aside funding of up to Rs 50 crore to support the hosting of National Games. Allocated across sports equipment, technical officials' pay, the Timing, Scoring and Result (TSR) service provision, and the administration of technical conduct, the money would address each of those operational areas.
