INDIA Bloc Announces Joint Action Plan Over SIR Row, Calls for Return to Ballot Papers

The INDIA bloc opposition alliance held a three-and-a-half hour meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, finalizing a joint action plan that includes 'save democracy' marches from October 2-8, an MP march to the Election Commission on October 6, and a formal representation to the President of India. All member parties unanimously called for a return to ballot papers from EVMs. The action follows reported internal objections by two Election Commissioners over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

The communiqué followed a three-and-a-half-hour meeting of opposition bloc leaders, including Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Omar Abdullah, Tejashwi Yadav, and Supriya Sule. He pledged to keep the public informed about ways in which the government was restricting voters' capacity to select their own elected representatives. Kharge contended that Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were the actual powers controlling the Election Commission, with publicly named officials acting as a front, and that the two leaders bore responsibility for manipulating electoral processes while those who stood against them faced pressure and threats. Rahul Gandhi conveyed that numerous opposition parties hold the position that India's constitutional order faces pressure from Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Shah, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and that those deemed responsible for weakening democratic institutions would be held to account. Rahul Gandhi conveyed to opposition figures that their collective efforts had successfully brought public attention to allegations that the Prime Minister and Home Minister had weakened democratic institutions and influenced electoral processes, while also asserting that those present bore a shared responsibility to protect the Constitution and that the months ahead would bring considerable change to the nation. Banerjee characterised the situation as a matter of concern, contending that Gyanesh Kumar had acted in bad faith and demanding that he step down without delay. Banerjee described voting as a constitutional right and indicated that demonstrations would broaden to encompass every tier of government if Gyanesh Kumar were not removed from his post.
