IMF Chief Calls for Urgent Fiscal Repairs as Global Debt and Bond Yields Rise
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has urged governments worldwide to take immediate steps to repair fiscal imbalances, warning that the global economy's resilience is approaching its limits. Speaking at the annual IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, she called on China to spend more, the US to save more, and Europe to invest more. The IMF raised its 2026 global growth forecast to 3.1 percent but noted that lower-income countries are not benefiting equally, particularly amid elevated energy costs. Georgieva also stated that the United States cannot rely solely on economic growth to reduce its debt, which now exceeds US$40 trillion.
