Throughout the offseason, Chicago held a place in what is considered the NFL's longest-running rivalry. Two late-game victories over the Packers — one in Week 16 and another in the NFC Divisional round the following postseason — had built a wave of confidence among Bears supporters heading into that stretch.
The game played that Sunday afternoon left the Packers-Bears rivalry balanced, with Green Bay holding off a shift in momentum toward Chicago. Green Bay's 31-7 victory at Lambeau Field came from a collective effort across the roster, while Bears head coach Ben Johnson, speaking afterward, acknowledged that his team had absorbed the full force of what the Packers had to offer.
Sunday's contest made plain that quarterback depth alone — Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum had each delivered a win for Chicago — does not in itself provide the kind of stability that a settled, experienced starter brings to a roster. A defensive game plan targeting the Bears' offensive unit was assembled by Packers coordinator Jonathan Gannon ahead of the matchup.
Finishing 12 of his 21 pass attempts for 87 yards, Bagent threw two interceptions, and after the second one Johnson turned to Keenum to take over at quarterback in the fourth quarter. A 16-play drive in the second quarter trimmed a 14-point deficit for Chicago, yet the offense managed little after that point, with three three-and-outs and three possessions of more than five plays all failing to produce points.
Chicago's offense managed just 246 yards in total that day, and Bagent, speaking afterward, pointed to himself as the starting point for any improvement needed. Addressing those shortcomings, both individually and across the roster, remained the stated priority.
Chicago's ground attack against Green Bay produced just 81 yards — a season-low output that stood in contrast to a Packers run defense that had ranked among the NFL's poorest through that point in the year, while Bagent's postgame remarks reflected a view that the team's execution had fallen short from the outset. Swift's 43-yard total on the ground represented a low point not seen since the final week of the previous season, and the remaining ball-carriers offered little to compensate for Monangai's absence through injury.
Five turnovers — three interceptions and two fumbles — repeatedly cut off any momentum Chicago built, while Johnson, speaking about an offense that never operated as intended, directed his assessment inward, putting the preparation, the in-game play-calling, and the broader tactical approach under scrutiny before noting that the opposing side had put together a coherent and well-executed plan. Gannon's work in that area stretches back across many years.
Green Bay's head coach Matt LaFleur, who also calls the offensive plays, repeatedly directed his passing attack at the Chicago secondary over the course of the afternoon. Ending the game 25-for-31 through the air, Love posted a completion rate of 80.6% — a personal best for the season — while his 367 passing yards came within 20 of matching his single-game high, a total that included four completions each covering more than 40 yards.
Watson hauled in six passes for 143 yards and found the end zone twice, while Golden racked up 123 yards on six receptions. Johnson noted afterward that the Green Bay offense tends to attack on third-and-long, with Love leaning on his pass catchers when given time in the pocket.
Opening play brought a 91-yard march to the end zone — the farthest Green Bay had needed to travel for a score all season — while one of the defenders on the coverage unit acknowledged afterward that the group had given up too much space and taken a flawed pursuit angle on the play. Two rushing touchdowns credited to running back MarShawn Lloyd marked the first ground scores the team had put on the board all season. A season-high yardage total of 428 came from Green Bay's offense in that contest.
Holding a 31-7 lead through the fourth quarter, Green Bay continued to pass the ball and missed two field goal attempts, while Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson said afterward that the rivalry rendered the wide margin beside the point — teams invested in a matchup of that kind do not ease off, he explained, and his side had an obligation to keep competing.
After five weeks of play, the Bears remained composed in the wake of the defeat, with no signs of alarm within the team. On Friday, Williams rejoined the squad for training and was on the field for warmups ahead of the contest.
Johnson indicated that Williams was progressing well in his recovery and was nearing a return for the Oct. 18 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, while Keenum told reporters the roster had the toughness and talent to bounce back, even if that day's performance had not reflected it.
Johnson acknowledged that the group's character and direction would only become clear once the process had run its course.
