Fox News commentator Jessica Tarlov offered a response after Donald Trump, addressing a rally audience, remarked that uttering the most foolish statements imaginable would still draw cheers from those gathered to support him.
Tarlov, a 42-year-old co-host on Fox News' The Five, posted on X following Trump's appearance before supporters at a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday, October 10, held as part of his campaign ahead of the midterm elections, writing that Trump had long demonstrated an understanding of what resonates with his supporters.
Tarlov had previously drawn attention to sparse attendance at Trump events, describing the pattern as one worth noting. Trump, responding to a question from an acquaintance about managing stage fright before large gatherings, told the audience that addressing crowds came naturally to him because of the warmth he perceived in those rooms, a remark that drew applause from those present. He went on to describe the reception as filled with warmth, calling the atmosphere unlike anything he had expected.
At the rally, Trump told the crowd that their enthusiasm would greet even his least-considered remarks with applause, then drew a contrast by characterising his actual statements as grounded in common sense rather than foolishness. Proceeding through the speech, he described his platform as grounded in practical reasoning, with the assertion that those positions tend toward a broadly conservative outlook. Proponents of the position, he indicated, draw from practical reasoning rather than any particular political tradition.
Border security, low taxation, and a well-funded military were listed among the policy priorities expressed in the statement.
Responses posted on X included one user suggesting the statement was the most truthful thing the speaker had ever offered, and another interpreting it as an acknowledgment that he regularly says things lacking in substance. A third user noted that those applauding in the background would be permanently associated with the moment through the video, while one commenter described the footage as uncomfortable to view.
Remarks delivered by Trump at the Tennessee rally prompted observers to draw parallels with statements he had previously made about the loyalty of his MAGA base. At a campaign rally held in Iowa in 2016, Trump made a remark in which he described his voter loyalty as so entrenched that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue without losing support; a broadcast outlet that covered the event at the time noted that he did not elaborate further on those comments. During a separate 2016 appearance, he expressed affection for voters with lower levels of formal education.
