Down 14 points after Texas built a 17-3 advantage in the opening half, Florida fought back on the road at Austin to post a 27-24 victory over the seventh-ranked Longhorns on October 17. Making his debut as a starting quarterback at the college level, Tramell Jones Jr. guided his team to the win. Following that result, Florida's conference record stood at five wins and two losses, whereas Texas found itself at four wins against two defeats.
Heading into the matchup, Texas carried a defeat from the previous week against Oklahoma, while Florida arrived on the back of consecutive setbacks against Missouri and South Carolina. Florida kept its advantage intact even as Texas trimmed the deficit to three points.
Raleek Brown punched in a rushing touchdown on the opening drive, and the Longhorns tacked on three more points with a field goal the following possession. Over those two possessions, Florida's defense surrendered a combined 135 yards. A punt fielded by Niblett turned into a return touchdown, stretching Texas's lead to 17-3.
With Texas unable to convert on fourth-and-one, linebacker Ty Jackson's tackle of Hollywood Smothers handed Florida a possession near midfield heading into the half. On fourth-and-12, a 17-yard connection between Jones and Dallas Wilson along the sideline kept the drive alive. With 18 seconds remaining before halftime, a touchdown connection between the quarterback and tight end Lacota Dippre brought the Florida drive to a close.
Heading into the break with a seven-point deficit, Florida took possession off the opening kickoff of the second half. Stretching across 15 plays and covering 69 yards, Florida's drive to open the third quarter ran for more than eight minutes before it ended. A scoring pass by Jones, caught by Dippre, brought the two sides level.
A 28-yard attempt by Patrick Durkin split the uprights to push Florida in front, and a rushing score from Jadan Baugh stretched that advantage to 27-17 with 6:22 left on the clock. Facing a fourth-down rush with the pass protection breaking down around him, Manning escaped the pressure and found Emmett Mosley V downfield for a 62-yard gain that kept Texas in contention. Coleman hauled in a scoring throw from the quarterback, pulling his team within three points.
With 2:32 remaining on the clock, a punt gave Texas the ball back — only for a strip-sack by Graham to cut that drive short. Two minutes remained on the clock when a blitz from Graham stripped the ball from Manning's grasp, and Clark recovered the loose fumble to hand possession over. A scramble for the first-down marker on third down kept the ball in Florida's hands, leaving Texas without another opportunity to possess it. Florida held possession through the final seconds, letting the clock expire to seal the result.
After a productive start by the Longhorns, the Florida defense held firm across multiple subsequent possessions. Six plays across the third quarter netted the Texas offense a total of eight yards. With Manning dragged behind the line of scrimmage by defensive tackle Brendan Bett, the fourth-and-two attempt near midfield came up short in the final quarter. On Texas's last drive, a strip by Graham left the ball free, and Clark gathered it in.
Florida's defense logged five quarterback takedowns on the afternoon, with those plays collectively pushing the opposition backward by 29 yards. Florida ran 81 offensive plays against Texas's 50, controlling possession for 38 minutes and 11 seconds of game time. A gap of 41 yards separated the two offenses, with Florida's total of 313 coming in ahead of the 272 that Texas managed to accumulate.
Jones completed 22 of his 35 attempts for 155 yards and a pair of scoring throws, with no interceptions. Manning completed 14 of his 20 passing attempts for 173 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions. On the ground, Florida's ball-carriers outpaced their Texas counterparts by 59 yards — 158 to 99 — with Baugh accounting for 91 of those on 25 touches and Jones adding 41 more across 10 attempts.
On third-down attempts, the Texas offense managed to move the chains just twice in 10 tries. Eight of Florida's 19 third-down attempts found the mark, with every one of those conversions arriving in the second half. On fourth-down situations, Texas managed one conversion from three tries while Florida handled both of its opportunities successfully.
Following the game, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told reporters that his review of the offense would take in personnel decisions, play-calling choices, and his own coaching performance, stating that every aspect of the unit was subject to scrutiny. Four areas drew his attention as needing work: how receivers ran their routes, protection against the pass rush, reading and picking up blitzing defenders, and ball-carrying in short-yardage situations. Noting that training had gone well, he pointed to a disconnect between preparation and what the team was delivering on match day. No quarterback swap was put forward by Sarkisian. Roster assessment and getting more out of the players already on hand were both tasks he identified as lying ahead.
Defensive end Colin Simmons departed with a lower-leg injury for Texas early in the fourth quarter. Sarkisian indicated he had no information on the extent of the injury.
Heading into Saturday's contest, Texas had recorded a dozen straight victories on their home floor. Across road venues since the 2020 season got underway, Florida's travel record stood at 11 wins against 29 defeats. With starter Aaron Philo sidelined by a shoulder injury, Jones absorbed a considerable share of the week's practice snaps. Across his backup outings that season, 23 of 29 throws had found their target for a total of 252 yards before Saturday arrived.
Four wins opened the Florida campaign before consecutive defeats — a 45-17 road setback at Missouri and a 38-19 home loss to South Carolina — pulled the record back toward even. Heading into those two defeats, Florida's offense had been averaging 53.5 points and 532.5 yards per game. Over the two losses, those numbers dropped to 18 points and 356 yards per game. Between them, Austin Simmons of Missouri and LaNorris Sellers of South Carolina had thrown for 619 yards and six touchdowns against the Gators, with neither quarterback throwing an interception.
Through the first four wins, Baugh put together 600 yards on the ground and found the end zone 11 times — a pace that stalled over the next two outings, when 27 carries netted him just 72 yards. During the week leading up to the game, Graham addressed Florida's tackling, telling players that the missed assignments against South Carolina fell below any acceptable standard and that the unit owed each other stronger collective effort going forward. Following the defeat against South Carolina, Wilson gathered the players and urged them to refocus on core skills while maintaining team unity.
Speaking to a broadcast outlet, Sumrall noted that Florida had stayed in the fight throughout the game in a way the program had not done during either of its two previous defeats. A road win against a top-10 opponent had not materialised for the Gators in over a decade — not since 2012 had they managed to pull one off away from home against that level of competition.
A matchup at Texas puts Mississippi on the visiting side when October 24 arrives. A bye week gives Florida time to prepare before the October 31 matchup with Georgia, set to take place in Atlanta.
