Travel between Saudi Arabia and other destinations has been disrupted by a wave of airline cancellations tied to heightened tensions across the broader region. Differing suspension dates announced by carriers — Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, and Akasa Air among them — have left a number of travellers without clarity on when their booked journeys will be affected.
Among airports across Saudi Arabia, Riyadh's facility has recorded the heaviest volume of disruption. Flight-tracking firm Cirium recorded that nearly half of all departures — 552 out of 1,178 flights listed on the national timetable for 15 October — never left the ground. Close to half of all flights on the timetable — just under 47 percent — faced disruption.
Among all the airports tracked, King Khalid International, which serves Riyadh, logged a greater volume of service interruptions than any other facility in the data. According to Cirium figures, out of 366 departures slotted for 15 October, 298 either failed to take off or were pulled from the timetable entirely, leaving more than four in every five flights — 81.4% of the day's planned schedule — unflown.
At Dammam, nearly half of all departures on the schedule — 45.8% — were affected. Departure disruptions at Abha reached 45.5%, whereas the figure for Jeddah stood at roughly half that rate, with 22.6% of flights either cancelled or not in service.
Carriers operating under Saudi registration have faced disruptions as well. More than half of Saudia's outbound flights — 57.1% by the airline's own tally — faced some form of departure irregularity. Flynas recorded a rate of 44% while Flyadeal came in one point higher, at 45%.
Flights operated by Air India and Air India Express between India and three Saudi Arabian destinations — Riyadh, Dammam, and Jeddah — are on hold through 20 October. Flights operated by IndiGo to destinations across Saudi Arabia are set to remain grounded through 24 October. Service on Akasa Air routes connecting to and from Riyadh will remain grounded through 24 October, while flights between the carrier and Jeddah are not expected to resume before 21 October.
A person holding Indian nationality lost their life when an attack unfolded at Riyadh airport on 10 October, details that surfaced through a preliminary report and that appear to have prompted the schedule revisions now in place.
Flight routes linking Dubai to three Saudi cities — Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam — have been dropped from the Emirates network. Flight service between Abu Dhabi and both Riyadh and Dammam will not operate on Etihad Airways until after 18 October. Flights between Abu Dhabi and Jeddah have also been affected, with a number of departures pulled from schedules.
Routes connecting Flydubai to three Saudi destinations — Riyadh, Dammam, and Abha — are no longer operating, while flights to Jeddah, Madinah, Tabuk, and Gassim remain available on a partial basis. Flights operated by Air Arabia on a number of routes between Sharjah and destinations across Saudi Arabia have been taken out of service. Outbound and inbound Qatar Airways services connecting Riyadh and Dammam were halted as part of the same action.
Flights between Manila and Riyadh under the Philippine Airlines banner are set to remain grounded through 29 November. Cathay Pacific has pushed back the resumption of its Dubai and Riyadh routes to 31 January 2027, while Air France-KLM is keeping curbs on its Riyadh operations in place through October. Service between Atlanta and Riyadh under the Delta banner will not begin until March 2027, following a postponement of the originally planned launch.
Flights operated by Malaysia Airlines between Madinah, Jeddah, and their connecting destinations are set to remain grounded through 17 October.
Flight operations to the UAE have been picking up, though passenger volumes on a number of routes have yet to fully rebound. Scheduling decisions at airlines remain under active review, with factors including airspace limitations, operational conditions, and safety-related concerns all feeding into those assessments.
Depending on the airline and route involved, cancellation and rebooking rules can differ considerably. Those with flights bound for Saudi Arabia are being urged by carriers to contact their airline directly and confirm departure details before heading to the airport. Passengers whose bookings have been disrupted are being advised to get in touch with their airline or travel agent to explore options for alternative flights or a refund.
