Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo Spreads to Eighth Province

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to North Ubangi, becoming the eighth affected province. Over 9,400 cases and 4,536 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak began in May, making it the largest ever documented in Congo. Kenya has also reported new cases, raising regional public health concerns.

On Sunday, public health officials reported that the Ebola virus had spread into an eighth province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the country's largest recorded outbreak continued to outpace the measures put in place to stop it. Health Ministry records show that North Ubangi — a northwestern province that borders the Central African Republic — has been drawn into the outbreak's reach, with two cases verified through laboratory testing, one of which proved fatal. When health authorities assembled multi-decade records of Ebola responses across the continent, this outbreak in Congo stood above every earlier one in both the number of people affected and the death toll — trailing only the 2014–2016 epidemic in West Africa when measured against the full worldwide historical record. On Sunday, Kenya's Health Ministry recorded one additional laboratory-confirmed Ebola case, bringing the total number of verified infections for the month to eight.
