DMK leader MK Stalin addressed party members on Saturday, claiming that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay had been treating the state assembly as though it were a film set, drawing on his acting career in the speeches he delivered there. At a party executive gathering, Stalin raised questions about the administration's handling of existing programmes.
Stalin claimed that Vijay's administration had spent its time rebranding initiatives originally introduced under the DMK's tenure. He observed that the legislative session had begun to resemble a performance.
Stalin asserted that the party maintained close ties to ordinary people's lives, irrespective of election results. He characterised the party's electoral loss as an opportunity to reassess and define its future course, and outlined plans to restructure the party through an upcoming Executive Committee gathering.
Stalin noted that the conduct of party functionaries played a part in the election loss. He called for errors to be openly acknowledged and argued that a thorough internal review across the board was needed, rather than simply replacing candidates at the local level. He observed that any wrongdoing by a member reflects on the organisation as a whole, given its seven-and-a-half decades of history.
Stalin stated that after a defeat, a range of accounts and justifications typically come forward. "Rather than reviewing each constituency in isolation and replacing personnel where gaps were found, he stated that a thorough organisational self-evaluation was needed across the board."
The DMK Executive convened and adopted resolutions focused on broadening youth involvement within the party and introducing tenure and age-based restrictions across a range of internal positions. The adopted resolutions outlined defined stances on party policy matters.
Rules cap the Branch Committee Secretary role at 45 years of age, limiting holders to no more than two consecutive terms in office. Local branch committees are to be established across Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Salem municipal bodies, along with any additional corporations where required, with the aim of bolstering Ward Committee functioning.
Each Ward Committee in the Chennai Corporation is projected to cover roughly 10,000 voters, compared with an estimated 5,000 voters per committee across other municipal corporations. Ward Committee Secretaries at Municipal, City, and Town Panchayat level are subject to an upper age threshold of 50 years alongside a restriction of two terms in the role.
A retirement age of 60 and a cap of two consecutive terms apply to Town Panchayat Committee Secretaries. Each Area Committee under the Chennai Corporation is set to cover roughly 40,000 voters, whereas those established under other municipal corporations will encompass approximately 30,000 voters apiece. Area Committee Secretaries are restricted to a maximum of two terms and are required to be under 60 years of age upon appointment.
Each City Committee would cover roughly 40,000 registered voters, with the Secretary role capped at a maximum age of 60 and limited to two terms in office. Each Union Committee will cover an average electorate of 30,000 voters, while the position of Union Committee Secretary carries an upper age threshold of 60 years and a restriction of two consecutive terms.
The DMK Executive Committee's deliberations resulted in an extension of the tenure cap from two terms to three.
