Roughly $100 million in planned spending over the coming 18 months will fund the next phase of DigiKey's Thief River Falls expansion, with the investment directed toward building out both its worldwide product distribution center and its order management infrastructure.
DigiKey's revenue trajectory puts the distributor on track to exceed a 50% expansion by the close of 2026, a backdrop against which the latest announcement arrives. Projections place the near-term uplift at $1.5 billion, with a further $1 billion expected to materialise by 2027, while those involved described a thorough reassessment of how orders move through their system. The process spans every touchpoint — from when a customer first makes contact through to the back-end systems where their orders are received and processed.
DigiKey CEO Dave Doherty noted that the platform the organisation built internally from the ground up now faces mounting strain as the company's scale has grown beyond what that infrastructure was designed to handle.
The multi-year plan sets out an enlarged distribution center, a rebuilt order management system, and wider automation across fulfillment operations. In a prepared release, Doherty attributed the company's foundation to the surrounding community and framed the investment as one aimed at the decade ahead rather than near-term returns, with the statement also pointing to a commitment to serve customers globally while supporting the Thief River Falls workforce that carries out that work day to day.
The quoted remark conveyed that every investment of this kind sends a consistent message to customers, suppliers, and the surrounding community — that operations are continuing at pace. The facility, which began running in Thief River Falls in 2022, was built with expansion in mind, leaving much of its fourth floor unoccupied at the outset to accommodate future growth.
One of the newly installed automated packing units has already been delivered to the facility, with full operation expected within the next few months and further automation set to roll out gradually over the years ahead. Doherty has maintained that the technology serves a genuine purpose, though its adoption is not expected to result in any reduction of the existing workforce.
Doherty noted that customer demand for DigiKey's offerings has driven a roughly 10-percent annual expansion since the company's founding 54 years ago, adding that maintaining the capacity to keep pace with that trajectory remains a priority — a view he sees reflected in the broader direction of both the business and its surrounding community. DigiKey, based in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, distributes electronic components and automation products to markets around the world.
