Cristiano Ronaldo Departs Portugal National Team Camp Amid Conflict with Manager Jorge Jesus

Cristiano Ronaldo departed Portugal's national team training camp during the September-October international break following a press conference by head coach Jorge Jesus, in which the manager confirmed Ronaldo would remain on the bench against Denmark and made clear he alone controls lineup decisions. The move raises questions about Ronaldo's future with the national team.

Cristiano Ronaldo announced his withdrawal from Portugal's September-October squad just hours after head coach Jorge Jesus told reporters that no friction existed between the two men, with Ronaldo noting in a public post that the decision followed a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation and that he would address his reasons to the Portuguese public at a later point. Ronaldo left the pitch at the final whistle without having featured in the match and was also absent from Portugal's training sessions ahead of Thursday's UEFA Nations League tie against Denmark, with coach Jesus stating there had been no falling-out between the two, explaining that all decisions over team selection were his alone, expressing regret over sending Ronaldo out to warm up during the Norway game, while defending his decision to keep the 41-year-old on the bench despite earlier suggestions he would be included, and noting that any prior indications of selection were ultimately at his own discretion as head coach. Jesus clarified that no other person held any power over the personal decisions belonging to him. The forward, aged 25, scored the winning goal against Norway and was set to retain a place in the starting line-up for the following fixture. Before the head coach addressed the media ahead of the fixture, Ronaldo's absence from training had already drawn attention, owing to his role as the national side's all-time leading scorer and captain. The squad will be without its all-time top scorer for the rest of the transfer window. Reports indicate that Ronaldo is at odds with Jesus and the Portuguese Football Federation.
