Christian Pulisic Navigates Injury Recovery and Absence from USMNT Squad as New AC Milan Era Begins

Christian Pulisic has been left out of the first USMNT squad under Mauricio Pochettino following the FIFA World Cup, while simultaneously navigating a limited role at AC Milan as he recovers from a micro-fracture injury. Pochettino has repeatedly referenced Pulisic's decision to skip the 2025 Gold Cup, while Milan manager Ruben Amorim has expressed strong belief in the player's qualities despite managing his return to fitness carefully. Pulisic has made impactful substitute appearances for Milan but is yet to start a competitive match under Amorim.

In the fortnight leading up to the forthcoming friendlies against Peru, Chile, Canada and Mexico, Pochettino addressed reporters on several occasions — including a roundtable with Premier League journalists in London — repeatedly describing the fixtures as a chance to reset, having received a new four-year contract following the United States' 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16 at the World Cup. Pulisic, by contrast, has not been given an equivalent opportunity to reset. Pulisic had not featured in the Gold Cup and went on to miss a chance at a defining moment in the World Cup, staged on home soil. Questions about his performance arose following the defeat against Belgium. Rabiot contributed an assist for Cisse's opening goal before adding the winner in a 2-1 victory. That quality is one he values in his squad, though Pulisic remains available for selection despite picking up an injury and then sustaining a knock during the opening training session before stepping away briefly and returning to full training. A pass directed towards Goncalo Ramos slipped beyond his grasp, after which Milan went on to suffer defeat.
