Charles Spencer Acknowledges Factual Error in Diana Memoir But Refuses to Pull Book from Shelves

Earl Spencer, Charles Spencer, has acknowledged a factual error in his memoir about Princess Diana, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, but has declined to remove the book from sale. The book — titled *Swan Song: Diana, My Sister* — has gone on sale in the United Kingdom following a week of debate over its contents and questions about its accuracy. Broadcaster Piers Morgan has urged Earl Spencer to eliminate every existing copy of the memoir, contesting the truthfulness of claims about him contained within it. Morgan disputes the book's assertion that he had any involvement in publishing unauthorised photographs of Diana while serving as Daily Mirror editor, pointing out that he did not take up the position until nearly two years after the relevant story had already appeared in print. Via an online video, Morgan challenged the credibility of Earl Spencer's account, pointing to what she described as factual inaccuracies in his portrayal of her, while Spencer's book has simultaneously introduced fresh allegations about the royal family's treatment of Diana, drawing on both new material and previously documented reporting. Of the allegations Earl Spencer has put forward, those relating to telephone conversations he claims took place with Charles around the time of Diana's fatal road collision in Paris in 1997 are the most direct in nature. She maintained that her account was accurate, while his representative worked to cast doubt on it by framing it as uncertain. In a television interview, he recalled that his sister had found her time in Australia enjoyable, though he noted that the 1983 royal tour, while broadly viewed as a success, marked a shift in the relationship between Diana and Charles that would go on to strain their marriage.
