At a Paris performance, Celine Dion presented an updated interpretation of the Chanel dress she had first worn to the 1997 Academy Awards ceremony. Adorned with thousands of jewels and beads, the redesigned couture gown made its public appearance during the Paris show. The exhibition draws on fashion history and craftsmanship, with Dion's aesthetic choices woven throughout as a throughline.
Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019, created the original gown, whose deep neckline and constellation-inspired necklace drew attention on the red carpet. The couture gown was reinterpreted for the occasion by Chanel's current creative director, Matthieu Blazy.
Two separate vocal performances marked Dion's appearance at the 1997 Academy Awards ceremony, with "Because You Loved Me" and "I Finally Found Someone" each performed on the stage. At the 70th Academy Awards ceremony the following year, Dion performed My Heart Will Go On — the signature song from the film Titanic — and took home an Oscar.
Mattel has added Dion to its lineup of signature dolls, releasing a Barbie modelled after the performer. Released to coincide with her ongoing residency, the collectible doll replicates the deep-blue, full-length-sleeved gown she wore when delivering "My Heart Will Go On" at the 1998 ceremony. The azure necklace adorning the doll is drawn from the "Heart of the Ocean" jewellery that holds a central place in the 1997 film, serving as a direct design reference to that on-screen piece.
At the 1998 ceremony, a replica of the necklace appeared around Dion's neck as she performed the Titanic ballad. Mattel has now added Dion to its roster of Barbie subjects, a group that has previously included Mariah Carey and Tina Turner.
Dion, whose return to live performance following her Stiff Person Syndrome diagnosis included a residency, described joining the Barbie legacy through a doll tied to one of her most personally meaningful career moments as a genuine honour. The doll's creator expressed a hope that it would encourage people to speak up, pursue their ambitions, and trust in their own abilities.
Tears overtook Dion midway through her rendition of Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore, a moment that unfolded at the Paris La Défense Arena during her eleventh appearance there. Video posted to Instagram captured the performer telling the audience that she had understood every word spoken to her, before pausing shortly afterwards, telling those present that the words had slipped from her mind, and bringing her hands up to cover her face.
Audience members joined in to carry the performance through that moment, after which Dion apologised and expressed relief at their presence. Le Parisien also reported that she lost her footing during Un Autre Monde before steadying herself and signalling to the audience with a thumbs up. She is in Paris for a five-week run of performances, having told audiences that her ongoing health journey has become a driving force in her life.
