Bilateral trade discussions between Canada and India moved forward across the past week, with Maninder Sidhu heading a trade mission that took in New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai in his capacity as International Trade Minister. According to documentation released by his office, the trade delegation brought together delegates from close to 300 Canadian companies and exporters, ultimately yielding 34 commercial agreements with a combined value approaching $300 million.
Deals reached across a range of fields — among them aerospace, clean technology, energy transition, life sciences, infrastructure, tourism, and information and communications technologies — formed the basis of what was agreed. A statement from Sidhu's office noted that bilateral trade discussions were advanced through face-to-face meetings with Piyush Goyal, India's industry minister, at stops in both New Delhi and Mumbai.
Talks between Canada and India on a new Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement are aimed at wrapping up before the year draws to a close. Ten gatherings between the ministers have taken place across the period running from May 2025 onward.
Trade discussions between Canada and India got underway after Mark Carney and Narendra Modi met on the margins of the G20 leaders' gathering in South Africa, an encounter that took place close to a year ago. Carney disclosed on Thursday that Modi's itinerary places him in Toronto and Ottawa across December 11 and 12, with those two days landing just ahead of the G20 summit set to open in Miami later that month.
Alongside a target of boosting two-way commerce with India to $70 billion per year by 2030, the arrangement is also intended to expand exports over the coming ten years. Trade flowing in both directions between Canada and India — covering goods as well as services — reached a combined value of $30.4 billion across 2025.
Goyal remarked in May that Carney's trip had laid the groundwork for a broad reset of ties between Canada and India. Trade negotiations between Canada and India have been under way since 2010.
Relations between the two nations had been frozen after Ottawa alleged that New Delhi bore some responsibility for the death of a Sikh community figure in Surrey, B.C. Carney, having taken office in 2025, moved to repair those ties early in his tenure, making a trip to Mumbai and New Delhi in March toward that end. No Canadian prime minister had made the trip in the preceding eight years.
The visit wrapped up with Modi in attendance for the formalisation of several accords — among them a uranium supply arrangement valued at $2.6 billion, covering roughly 22 million pounds destined for India's energy sector, alongside ten commercial deals collectively exceeding $5.5 billion in value. Sidhu's statement described the outcomes as evidence that Canadian firms had developed connections across energy, critical minerals, and aerospace that would reinforce a long-term relationship with one of the world's most rapidly expanding large economies, and that the opportunities secured through the mission would generate enduring benefits for workers and businesses.
