Brighton Thrash Arsenal 3-0 as Tottenham Sink Deeper Into Trouble

Arsenal's title defence opener without defeat was brought to a close by a 3-0 defeat against Brighton, while Tottenham also failed to collect three points, going down 3-2 to Aston Villa. The manager described the team's displays over the previous six or seven weeks as having been of a high standard, though the day's result offered a reminder of the ground's recent history — the reigning Premier League champions have now lost at the Amex for the third consecutive season, following defeats against Liverpool and Manchester City in the two prior campaigns. Having come from behind to overturn a two-goal deficit against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the League Cup days earlier — a turnaround not recorded in fifty years — Brighton arrived at the fixture with notable forward momentum. Under Fabian Hurzeler's direction, Brighton applied sustained pressure on Arsenal before Gross opened the scoring on 31 minutes, his shot finding the net via a deflection off the post. Andres headed home from Gross's corner inside the six-yard box just past the hour to extend the visitors' deficit, taking Brighton's tally to 16 league goals from five top-flight matches this term, with post-match remarks describing it as a victory to remember. Hurzeler conveyed satisfaction with how his players performed against the league's top-ranked club, even as the result marked Arsenal's worst defeat across all competitions since April 2023. Tottenham head into a three-week international break with the club positioned in the relegation zone. Spurs had failed to find the net across four consecutive fixtures, and while Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke both converted, the team were three goals down by the time those strikes came. Nicolas Jackson extended the lead by converting after a defensive error from Tottenham, with Emi Buendia then adding a third goal to give Aston Villa their first league win of the season, while De Zerbi told reporters his team created chances without finishing them in the opening half and noted the side's collective defensive frailty. Goals from Joe Willock and Lewis Hall in the opening seven minutes handed Newcastle a 2-1 win over Hull, ending the visitors' unbeaten run, as the manager urged his players to lead by example and take ownership within the squad. Tzolakis saved a penalty from Wissa before half-time to keep Hull within reach, while Cho netted a late goal for the away side to heighten the tension in the final minutes at St. James' Park. Manchester City stand three points away from the top of the table when they host Sunderland, while Manchester United face a trip to Fulham on Sunday, where manager Michael Carrick will be seeking a favourable outcome.
